The prestigious American publication provides constantly updated coronavirus calculations and, according to one of them, Lithuania has become the “leader” of the global pandemic. US estimates show that the average number of new cases in our country in the last 7 days is 2718. However, according to 100 thousand. the average per person (97.4), we are at the top of the table.

Lithuania is followed by Georgia and Luxembourg (96.7 and 88.7 cases, respectively). We see similar figures in Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia or Montenegro.

New York Times: Lithuania ranks first in the world in coronavirus cases diagnosed in the world

This calculation allows us to see which countries in the world are facing increasing morbidity in the current period. It is true that this does not necessarily mean that Lithuania has the worst epidemiological situation in the world. The calculation of only the number of diagnosed cases does not take into account the scope of testing in the country.

Our country ranks sixth only in Europe in terms of the average number of tests performed. Lithuania has twice as many tests (based on the number of tests per 1,000 people) as Germany, the Czech Republic or Slovakia. Four times as many tests are carried out in Bulgaria, Romania or Poland. Serbia and Croatia almost doubled.

More tests mean more positive results and greater precision of the actual epidemiological situation in the country.

There are 3418 cases of coronavirus infection in Lithuania

The National Public Health Center (NVSC) reports that 3,418 cases of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were confirmed in Lithuania last day. Of these, 950 were registered in Vilnius, 753 in Kaunas, 367 in Klaipėda, 389 in Šiauliai, 246 in Panevėžys, 180 in Marijampolė, 149 in Alytus counties. Another 145 cases of infection were confirmed in the 108 counties of Telšiai and 96 Tauragė of Utena. 32 cases have not yet been assigned to any region of the country due to lack of information. The regions to which to assign these cases will be determined after the epidemiological study.

44 people died from COVID-19 last day, ranging in age from 40 to 99, according to data released by Statistics Lithuania on Wednesday.

In Lithuania, not only the number of deaths from Covid-19, but also the number of so-called “excess deaths” is growing rapidly, according to the latest statistics. In November, according to preliminary data, the number of deaths in Lithuania increased by more than 30% compared to 2018-2019.
