Lithuania has a very high level of air pollution: told how to protect yourself

[ad_1]

According to the Office of Public Health, with a dry and calm climate, air pollution in the city increases and pollutants accumulate in the air from the ground. Part of the pollutants are transferred from other European regions to the south and southeast. Today, the highest concentrations of pollutants are also likely to be found near busy streets, in those parts of the city where road construction and repair is taking place.

It hurts?

The smaller the diameter of the particles, the deeper the airways they reach. According to the World Health Organization, increased air pollution by particulate matter is contributing to an increase in the incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The particulate matter absorbs toxic substances and microorganisms and transports them to the deeper airways, which can lead to chronic poisoning and allergic reactions in the body. Particulate matter and all other environmental pollutants cause respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, bronchial asthma attacks, lung diseases, and death from these diseases.

How to protect?

To protect against particulate matter, it is important to follow a few rules. We recommend that you refrain from playing sports, jogging or walking outdoors. If possible, try to get out of town (especially for the elderly and mothers with babies and people with bronchial asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases, as these groups of people are the most vulnerable). However, if you spend time outdoors, we recommend that you limit your time outdoors, to avoid more intense exercise, away from the big city streets, wearing disposable medical masks. Do not open the windows when the air pollution index is very high indoors. If you feel unwell, see a doctor.

Pollution is detrimental to everyone’s health, but the most vulnerable are the elderly, infants, and people with bronchial asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases.
