On Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers reallocated funds from the Ministry of Health, which were intended to purchase personal protection measures against COVID-19, for this purpose. The preparation will be intended for medical institutions in the country.

“These funds will be used to purchase Veklury 100 mg (remdesivir), which is registered for the treatment of pneumonia caused by COVID-19 (coronavirus infection),” the ministry said.

The order states that the product will be purchased under an agreement dated October 7 between the European Commission (EC) and Gilead Sciences Ireland UC “to secure the supply of drugs for the treatment of COVID-19 in personal health care facilities. “.

The Ministry observes that the quantities of drugs to be purchased are based on the needs of health institutions, epidemiological forecasts and the information provided by the Government Chancellery on the projected number of patients and hospitalized.

Clinical trials of this and other drugs are currently ongoing in Lithuania and are scheduled to continue until April 2021.

Subjects are randomly assigned to receive standard therapy or one of the study drugs.

The International Solidarity Clinical Trial, initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO), is designed to investigate potentially effective drugs for COVID-19. In Lithuania, it is carried out by the Santara Clinic of the Vilnius University Hospital together with the Kaunas Clinics of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

The ministry announced two weeks ago that it plans to expand the number of subjects to 200.
