At an extraordinary government meeting on the management of COVID-19 on Tuesday night, the decision was made to purchase additional vaccines that could soon arrive in the country.

“Decide whether to reserve an additional amount or not. The Government of the Republic of Lithuania has already approved the respective purchase of quantities of vaccines from 6 companies, including Pfizer, and a prorated offer has now been received from the EC on equal terms to purchase additional doses of vaccines under equal conditions of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer-BioNTech. – The Minister of Health, Arūnas Dulkys, presented the question to the members of the Government.

He explained that circumstances are changing and that this vaccine is already being approved, and although Lithuania has ordered many other vaccines, the ministry seeks to protect the public from infection and support the EC proposal and take advantage of Lithuania’s quota.

0.616 million is allocated to Lithuania. dose of vaccine, the number of people vaccinated could consequently be halved, as two doses of the vaccine are needed per person.

“They are assumed by all parties on equal terms, on a pro rata basis, already under preliminary purchase agreements,” Dulkys explained.

Estonia is still deciding on this proposal and Latvia has already made a decision. The decision is valid only for 24 hours, reported A. Dulkys: “The news is good, it is important for the people of Lithuania.”

“This is the vaccine that has been developed the most, both in terms of registration and in other aspects, we should start the first vaccination this week, the opportunity to replenish our real vaccine stocks with these additional quantities in the coming years seems quite important considering how many other vaccines. so we have signed agreements, its development has been suspended or it is not happening as fast as expected ”, says I. Šimonytė.

He explained that more massive quantities are needed so that the quantities of vaccines are sufficient, since the economic losses due to the closure of the country are much greater than the price of the vaccine.

Gytis Andrulionis, Head of the State Medicines Control Service, explained that Lithuania has already acquired 1.24 million LTL with Pfizer and BioNTech. doses, and the aforementioned 0.616 million additional purchase of vaccines.

“It is important here that the manufacturer is reliable, has many years of experience in the development and production of vaccines, a reliable company, the contract has been evaluated by both the EC and the Ministry of Health,” said G. Andrulionis.

It has already been announced that the first shipment of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines will arrive in Lithuania on December 26, and vaccination will begin on December 27. The vaccines will be delivered periodically, according to an agreed schedule, to all countries of the European Union.
