The origins of the Lithuanian Football Federation date back to December 9, 1991, when our country finally returned to the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) in New York, after a 51-year hiatus, by lottery for the 1994 World Cup.
Since 1989, the Lithuanian Football Union and its president Algimantas Jarašiūnas have solved all the major football problems in the country, but after receiving a blessing from FIFA on January 11, 1992, it was decided to transform this organization into Lithuanian Football Federation.
The reporting conference was held in the auditorium of the Vilnius Paneris Floriculture Company.
Of the 126 delegates with voting rights, 98 arrived. There was no shortage of heated debates and speeches, so the conference, which started in the morning, was delayed until late.
Vytautas Dirmeikis, who had previously served as LFS executive secretary, received much criticism from his opponents and was already accused of usurpation and incompetence from the government, but when the first LFF president was elected around 9 p.m., the influential Telšiai managed to succeed.
Even before the conference, it was announced that eight people had expressed a desire to run for president. Some of them did not even attend the opening meeting, and two more decided to raise the flag as soon as the conference began.
