As political scientists explain, this is one of the ways that parties choose to attract voters.

The decision of the well-known economist Romas Lazutka to resort to politics and participate in elections with the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) received much attention. In early July, the party approved the list of candidates for the Seimas in single-member and multi-member constituencies. The teacher not only had a fifth place high on the list, but also the opportunity to represent the LSDP in the single-member Fabijoniškės district.

However, it is not yet clear whether a leading economist will stand for election.

“I still don’t know,” R. Lazutka told Eltai when asked if his plans to seek the mandate of a member of the Seimas would change anything.

“Neither I nor I participated, the lists have not yet been published, they are not registered. I just got up. Just that much,” explained the professor of the situation.

When asked once again if he was determined to participate in the elections with the Social Democrats, the professor replied that his position would be clear before August 7, the last day before the statements could be submitted to the Central Election Commission (CCA ).

Gintautas Paluckas, chairman of the LSDP party, said he did not know that one of the leaders on the list might consider not participating in the Seimas election.

“I don’t have that information,” he said, adding that, formally speaking, anyone on the electoral roll could still leave.

“Until August 7, everyone is free to make any decision,” G. Paluckas concluded.

ELTA recalls that in early July, the LSDP published candidates in single-member constituencies and its list in multi-member constituencies. Shortly thereafter, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the mayor of Jonava and the president of the Association of Municipalities of Lithuania, which ranked third on the list, announced that it had been removed from the list of Social Democratic elections. This decision, said M. Sinkevičius, was made on the recommendation of the Jonava branch of the LSDP.

First on the LSDP list is party chairman G. Paluckas. It was not classified and will be presented in the constituency of a single member of Utena.

After the party president in second place on the list, the elder of the LSDP faction in the Seimas Rasa Budbergytė (sole member of Šeškinė – Šnipiškė). It ranked first in the public ranking in early June. The third in the list is Linas Jonauskas, who will participate in the World Single Lithuanian Single Member. Fourth – Orinta Leiputė (one-person Kalniečiai), fifth – economist prof. R. Lazutka (sole member of Fabijoniškės).
