Latvian hockey director on moving the championship to Lithuania: “This is speculation” Sports

The head of the federation says the final decision on the championship belongs to the International Hockey Federation (IIHF), which is already considering various options.

“I don’t know anything about it. We don’t talk about it with the Lithuanians. The IIHF has to decide how the championship will be organized. I think this is speculation. IIHF will make a decisive decision and is already considering various options,” A. Kalvitis told BNS on Wednesday.

The Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Jurgita Šiugždinienė, announced on Wednesday that she and her Latvian colleague Ilga Šuplinska discussed the possibilities of Lithuania hosting a part of the World Hockey Championship competition, which was taking place in Minsk.

Vilnius and Kaunas would be waiting for the championship

The municipalities of the cities of Kaunas and Vilnius expressed their determination to accept this high-level competition on Wednesday.

“Kaunas could guarantee comfortable and high-quality conditions if it were decided to move part of the World Championship competition to Lithuania,” Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis told BNS.

“It is our duty to lend a hand. Vilnius is determined to do so”, Facebook wrote Vilnius Deputy Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

The Hockey World Championship is scheduled to take place from May 21 to June 6, with 16 national teams competing.

The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) said on Monday that its council had decided to withdraw the 2021 World Cup from Belarus “for security reasons beyond the control of the IIHF.”
