Illusions of improving demographics are dissipating

Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany, Scientific Director of the Center for Demographic Research and Experience, prof. Expert. Dr. Domantas Jasilionis stated that the latest statistics dispel illusions about the country’s exit from the demographic well.

“It has become an illusion for many that our country is successfully emerging from the so-called demographic well. (…) More arrivals than departures. This positive news, along with the leitmotif that migration can address demographic challenges, began to dominate also the public sphere. What is it really like? Looking deeper and closer, unfortunately, those illusions are dissipating, “said D. Jasilionis at the press conference.

He argued that the general population dynamics of the country is determined by the totality of demographic processes: births, deaths and migration.

“We must start with the birth rate, because it is the absolute number of births and the scheduling of the future population that largely determines the age structure of the population. And in recent years, we have registered the fewest births. . (…) This means that approximately each annual figure indicates the number of children who will go to school after about 6 years and who will enter the study or the labor market after 16-18 ”, said the expert.

“The quarantine has consequences in both directions. We will finally see it in a few months. But the consequences of the economic pandemic in the coming years are likely to have negative consequences for the birth rate,” he predicted.

This, according to the expert, also predicts a drop in the number of new marriages.

D. Jasilionis stated that emigration marks fundamental changes.

“We started hearing about the breakthrough in emigration and demographic change in the media comments. But looking deeper, can we discuss a fundamental change? According to demographers, it is too early to talk about it. And the main The problem is that emigration is still high ”, he explained.

Population decline may be even greater

I. Masiulaitytė-Šukevič, Lithuania’s Deputy Director General for Statistics, said at a press conference on Thursday that the long-term forecast now presented to Lithuania may worsen, taking into account the situation of the coronavirus pandemic.

Eurostat has predicted that Lithuania will have a population of 2.138 million in 2050. But the situation of the pandemic has not yet been taken into account when making these predictions. They will probably still be controlled in light of all the changes in the world. (…) If the trends do not change, the number of births will not increase, the population decline will be even stronger than before ”, informed a representative of Statistics Lithuania on the long-term forecasts at the press conference.
