Having recently celebrated the opening of a modernized rowing base, Kaunas Sports School Bangpūtys is taking the final steps towards a world-class training complex. After deepening the track, the athletes will row a 2 km long straight without any obstacles. At the same time, the nearby bathing place, popular with Kaunas residents, will be much safer.

“The fundamentally rebuilt rowing base building is a solid start. Now we are starting dredging work on a modern eight-lane route. The rowers from the country of Kaunas and Lithuania won many trophies, but until now they could only dream of conditions. quality for training. This old error will be fixed soon. In terms of rowers, the last strong mushroom remained just before the finish line, so we executed them with full force and at the highest possible pace “, said the mayor from Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

The upcoming 2km long course for academic kayaks, canoes and rowboats with modern start and finish infrastructure and trail marking buoys is just about all that is needed to host the top level competitions here.

The Government gave an additional impetus to this work to allocate 2 million. euros. According to V. Matijošaitis, this financing allowed everything to start immediately. There are a number of strategically important projects that are being implemented in the city, and the money is not unlimited, so it is necessary to calculate and evaluate who to prioritize at each moment. At the same time, it is good that the national government realizes and appreciates the work carried out by Kaunas, so the funds for the processes already started are received really solid.

In early July, a new rowing base was officially opened on the coast of Lamp dedžiai. Athletes who used to train in extremely bad conditions now have large spaces. These are two gyms, changing rooms, spacious showers, administrative facilities and other necessary facilities, and in the yard – an outdoor sports field, modern sheds, pontoon bridges and other necessary infrastructure. This complex is considered by rowing specialists as one of the most modern in the entire Northern European region. The closest base of this level, located within the city limits, is only in Switzerland.

Until now, Bangputis rowers have had to cover a distance of one kilometer. This was due to the shoals and peninsulas naturally formed in the lake. Last year, efforts were made to remove these barriers. The peninsula, excess gravel and sand deposits, boulders, mud have been excavated for more than half a year. More than 155 thousand. cubic meters of soil, is recalled in the report of the municipality of the city of Kaunas.

These days, Lake Lampėdis is preparing for the last stage: an impressive dredge is already floating in the water, with which it is planned to deepen the entire 2-kilometer stretch in March. According to the requirements, the depth of the runway must be at least 3 meters.

“This week we will prepare the dredge and start work. In one hour, this machine can pump 1,200 cubic meters of soil-water mixture, which will be ‘deposited’ in the deepest quarries,” said Darius Šapkauskas, deputy production manager at Hidrum .

At the same time, the dredge will level the bottom of the lake. It is no secret that the shores of Lampėdžiai are extremely deep and the bottom is full of shafts left over from the old quarry. This is considered to be one of the main reasons why bathing here has claimed many lives. By deepening the route, the drained soil will spread closer to the banks, thus smoothing its slope and eliminating the unevenness of the bottom. So next year it will be safer to swim in Lake Lampėdis.

The dredging works are scheduled to be completed in the spring of next year. Then the installation of rowing paths, start-finish places, buoys and pontoon and rope systems that mark the track will begin.

The municipal report emphasizes that the Bangputis rowing base is valued not only for its high-quality infrastructure, but also for its geographical location: there are no large waves, sudden changes in wind direction, and good water quality. There are all possibilities, without disturbing the landscape, to deepen, widen and equip a rowing track of the highest standards.

Currently, around 450 students attend sailing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing courses at Bangputis School. In 2017, after deciding to rebuild the old rowing base, a year later most of the buildings were demolished and a two-story building with spacious sheds was erected in its place. Gas heating has been brought to the new sports complex, modern heating and air conditioning systems are in operation, the water supply and sewerage are connected to the city’s central networks. The building is fully adapted for people with disabilities. On the first floor there is a school administration, sauna and showers and changing rooms for athletes, and on the second floor there are conference and training rooms. Here, the school students will improve their technique and maintain good physical shape at any time of the year through the use of special rowing machines.
