“A very important, long-awaited and promising day of many surprises, fun and pleasant surprises has really dawned, as a significant overdraft for all the years to come. In fact, almost all of you, and not only those who are here and those we do not see, have tried a lot, have worked a lot, have sacrificed time, sleepless nights, many activities to say today: yes, Klaipeda raises the profile of European youth. the flag of the capital in the city of Klaipeda.

It is beautiful and symbolic that the oldest city in Lithuania is becoming the European capital of youth. This contrast attests that it is maturity, youthful drive, rich and rich history, ambitious challenges that can bring fantastic results.

I believe in youth, in youth organizations, that have united the implementation of the title program for a common goal, for the common good. I hope that this is not just a calendar year, which will end very soon, but will leave a brilliant mark on the history of youth organizations, ”Klaipėda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas said at a remote conference, wishing for a youth boost.

The year will be not only a joy, an honor, but also a challenge, a responsibility, because the eyes of all Europe will be directed towards us.

The events are developed by young people

Greta Meškauskienė, Director of Klaipėda – European Capital of Youth 2021, says that this title was won by young people themselves, who wanted changes in their city.

“To achieve a change for the love of the city, what it would take for young people to want to stay here, to come back even after leaving, to grow up, to mature, to contribute to the creation of their city. This title in 2021 carries the message that we continue to invite young people to get involved in the project from the generation of ideas to its realization. The whole project is built in the direction we need to encourage young people to get involved, to contribute to activities to meet their needs.

We are changing, the city is growing, the community that will grow Klaipeda of the future is growing. What does youth capital promise? More than 70 activities that focus on the needs of today’s youth. According to the challenges, what the city of Klaipeda lacks is a little bit: how to encourage young people to get involved, to feel responsible for the city, for themselves.

The very idea of the project encourages: you have an idea, share it, the project will help you implement it. We have examples from last year, hopefully once we gain momentum, we will start with even higher expectations and ideas. The Klaipėda youth are not afraid of challenges, we see, we feel that the pandemic situation did not affect the desire to act, to do, we have a lot of potential.

We hope that 2021 will lay a solid foundation. Klaipeda will become an open and youth-friendly city like never before, ”says the manager.
