The contract for the reconstruction of the square with Plungės Lagoon was signed in 2019. December 16
Now the square has been arranged more than 400 meters from the dock, equipped with two terraces: one made of wood and one made of stone, a park for cyclists, skaters and skaters, and training grounds. Currently a playground is being maintained.
“The main works that remain are sidewalks, roads. Coating is about 52 percent done, with less than half remaining. We plan to finish everything in mid-December. So far, we assume. During the pandemic, the supply of materials was blocked, but so far everything is going according to plan, ”said Viktoras Bubelė, construction manager of Plungės Lagoon contractors.
Various recreation areas and artistic accents are prepared for the citizens.
The copper time zones run the main path along the main square, engraving the most important dates and events in the city, illustrated with laser-printed photographs on stainless steel plates. There are a total of five time zones, from the first mention of the city to the present.

According to V. Bubelė, a musical fountain will sprout from the sidewalk in the middle of the square. The jets of water will be coordinated with the music that will be played throughout the square, equipped with 20 speakers. The fountain will also be decorated with lights, colors and laser projections created by lasers in vertiginous currents.
The square is equipped with video surveillance cameras and lighting. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the square. During the reconstruction of the square, about 15 old damaged trees were cut down, but about 50 new trees, shrubs and other plants were replanted. In one place, under the trees, special columns have been prepared, to which, according to V. Bubele, hammocks can be placed.
“The whole square will be full of attractions, from gyms, playgrounds, lounges, fountain shows, free internet, entertainment with bicycles, skates, skateboards. There will be activities for everyone, from a child to an elderly person,” said V. Bubelė al Western Express.
He made no secret that the workers are getting a lot of attention from passersby, and after setting up the park, the cyclists even had to hire additional protection and install more cameras. According to the construction manager, there were those who wanted to test the unfinished park, so safety had to be guaranteed.
The mayor of Klaipėda, Vytautas Grubliauskas, assured that the good development of the work is optimistic.

“The predictions that the job should be done by Christmas are inspiring. Looking at the big picture and imagining what it will be like in the end, I think it will be the most welcoming and beautiful place not only in the center of the city, but in the entire city.” the mayor commented.
The cost of rebuilding the plaza has increased significantly since the initial calculations. Initially it was considered that the works could cost around 6-7 million. However, after the preparation and review of the technical project, the amount exceeded 10 million euros. euros.
“We found out the real price when the technical project was prepared. Of course, the last price comes when the contest is announced and the winner is chosen. The final price is 10.7 million. “This is the contract and it should probably not increase, and if it increases, because of non-essential things, such as granite transport costs,” said Gintaras Dovidaitis, Chief Advisor of the Klaipėda Municipal Administration.
According to him, due to increased costs for transportation of materials, it may be necessary to spend about 100 thousand. euros.
