On Friday afternoon, the thermometer column showed 27 degrees of heat. Many people were already burning in the sand, but those swimming in the sea have not yet been seen.
“The water is still cold, maybe 14 degrees. It should be warmed at least two degrees more,” said Aleksandras Siakki, deputy director of the Klaipėda Beaches public institution.
This year, he assembled a team of 72 rescuers to work on the beaches of the port city. Half of them worked as a lifeguard last year too.

Blue flags for two beaches.
The start of the season was marked by the elevation of Blue Flags, which mark the excellent quality of the beaches, at Melnrage II and Smiltyne.
These two beaches fulfilled the 27 requirements for said flag. “It is not a gift, we deserve it. A lot of work has been put into this,” said Klaipėda deputy mayor Arvydas Cesiulis.
Smiltynė Beach receives the blue flag for the fourth consecutive year, and the second Melnragė for the third consecutive year.
The Blue Flag is an international quality beach brand, which means that everything a tourist needs is here: adequate infrastructure is installed, lifeguards are on duty, cleaning and environmental protection are in charge. To receive a blue flag, municipalities must implement a series of requirements in the categories of environment, safety and quality of service. Compliance is verified by foreign and local inspectors. If defects are found, the flag should be lowered.
According to A. Siakki, there are real innovations on the beaches: drinking water taps have appeared, showers have appeared on the beaches of the disabled and Giruliai. The changing rooms contain recommendations on how to behave to protect yourself against the virus.
