An exceptional 13.6 million. Construction of the two ice rink buildings is scheduled to be completed immediately after the New Year, and hockey fans can already look forward to the first competition next spring.

“This autumn, not only mushrooms are growing well in Lithuanian forests, but also large infrastructure objects in Kaunas. One of them is a winter sports center, which will complement the growing sports base in our city so far. Once again, we must thank the Government, which has allocated more than half the amount necessary for this project. The strong support of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis was critical here. Kaunas residents will soon be able to see the results for themselves.

We also have more “hot” spots in a good way: construction has begun on the water sports center and the National Science Museum on Nemunas Island, the action has taken place at the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums. The reconstruction of the old sports hall is not standing on the site, as well as the dredging works are starting in Lampėdžiai near the new rowing base. The Aleksotas Innovation Industrial Park space is also taking more and more prominent forms, ”said Visvaldas Matijošaitis, the city’s mayor, to the visible and tangible processes in Kaunas.

Progress is visible from afar

Autokausta, the contractors that build the ice rink that meets the standards of the energy efficiency class A +, has already carried out works for 8 million euros. euros. The abandoned field between the Girstutis basin and the residential houses has changed beyond recognition in 11 months.

More than a hundred Autokausta employees work on the 2-hectare plot every day. Progress in the construction process is evident in the work carried out.

“Both ice rinks are already concreted and in a few weeks we will finish covering the roof and we will begin to place blocks. Inside, the floor is concreted, plumbing units are installed, metal constructions are covered with fire-retardant paint, electrical and ventilation networks are laid. The glass cabinets are coming soon, ”Audrius Pakėnas, Autokausta project manager, commented on today’s work.

According to him, the challenge at the beginning of construction was to divert the Gričiupis creek bed that flows underground away from the building. The stressful work process took some time and required the patience of the surrounding residents due to the prolonged additional noise at the construction site, but after that there were no obstacles and construction went on schedule.

Accent – white concrete

The white concrete facade panels will be the uniqueness of the building. Well-known architect Gediminas Jurevičius, who designed the winter sports center, claims that this exterior solution visually “softens” the impression of cold, hard concrete.

“The shabah that had been in this place for many years did not really decorate the city. Cars were being built here chaotically, the whole space had almost turned to garbage. When designing the building, we first wanted to bring cleanliness and aesthetics to make it a pleasure to look at the stadium for both the residents of the surrounding apartment buildings and their visitors, ”said G. Jurevičius.

Wood and concrete will dominate the interior and exterior of the arena, and special felt drop ceilings will be installed for better acoustics.

“Of course, much attention will be paid to the uniform lighting of the ice fields, so that there are no shadows and everyone can comfortably watch the competition or enjoy other performances on the ice,” said the architect.

In designing this exceptional facility, he paid close attention to creating an attractive environment. Uniquely designed modern chandeliers and benches will be built at the entrances to the arena, and the lining of the parking lots will be highlighted in inviting shades of brown and gray.

Strengthens the sports infrastructure

The interior of the arena will be decorated with two ice rinks. One of them will be dedicated to training sessions, and the other will be equipped with a grandstand with a capacity for about 500 spectators. All the necessary infrastructure has also been planned with auxiliary premises, changing rooms and administration.

According to Mindaugas Šivickas, Head of the Kaunas Municipality Sports Department, national and international competitions in hockey and figure skating will be able to take place in the new winter sports center.

At that time, training and competition will continue at Kaunas Winter Sports School “Baltų ainiai” operating on Aušros street. A few years ago, the old ice palace underwent a major renovation: the roof and façade were renewed, spectator seats were renewed and new costumes and a choreography room for figure skating were installed in place of the compressor that became warehouse.

There is also a new indoor ice rink in the courtyard adjacent to the building, which operates outdoors during the cooler part of the year.

Time for big projects

The construction of the new ice rink is not the only project of this scale in Kaunas, which has recently gained real momentum. In early fall, construction began on the water sports center and the Island of Sciences on Nemunas Island. The foundations of a new kindergarten are already being laid in Šilainiai, Kuršių street.

The S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums show more and more construction teams, which together with the reconstruction of the sports hall sets the tone for the future development of the sports complex in this space of Žaliakalnis. The city is preparing for the construction of a new athletics stadium. The Valley of Songs will soon be online.

Scientific organizations and technology and innovation companies are already looking to Aleksotas, where the installation of communications and other infrastructure necessary for the first research centers to be established here is being completed. The Industrial Innovation Park is expected to become a kind of Lithuanian Silicon Valley.
