Sunny morning, early greetings from flying balloons, and many activities and initiatives included in the City of Kaunas birthday celebration program, spread throughout the day and throughout the city. There were a lot of people in the old town and the city center despite the unfavorable weather forecasts and constant rain.

From early in the morning

Kick-off is at 7 am with music and balloons taking off from Unity Square and other parts of the city.

While some Kaunas residents were heading to the city in the afternoon and heading to the V. Putvinskio street daytime game and trying to delve into the history of this unique street, the architecture of buildings and personalities related to this street, uniforms of soldiers of the GDL artillery corps. .

The festive festivals of the 18th century. The cannon blasts were guaranteed to carry birthday wishes all over town.

“We went for a walk on the occasion of Aldoniniai,” said Aldona and Irena de Kaunas, one of Kaunas’ birthday guests. The women said they searched in vain for the event program, it was not announced exactly due to the limitations of the coronavirus pandemic, so they were comforted that they were allowed to walk and wait to see some dancers or musicians perform.

“Last year I really liked the orchestras. All the concerts are good. During the quarantine we missed the views and the entertainment. We would also like fairs,” Irena hinted.

However, not all Kaunas residents lacked precision. Some, on the contrary, walked and enjoyed what they accomplished and the surprise effect itself.

Museums have already been visited

The “Through the Open Window” readings that began in Laisv Las Alley at the time were not as loud as the cannons, but they also attracted the attention of passersby.

Selected in 1931-1941. Actors Motiejus Ivanauskas and Martyna Gedvilaitė from the Kaunas National Drama Theater read the texts of current literary issues from the cultural life magazine Naujoji Romuva in the window of the Vincas Kudirka Public Library in Kaunas.

This event was one of those noted by two other Kaunas residents. They were happy to register and participate in the “Library Treasures” tour. When mentioning the invitation to visit some museums for free on Saturday, the women said that all the museums had managed to visit them long before the city’s birthday.

“We also saw tests in the city today, but we chose different activities,” said the interlocutors.

35 m. wedding anniversary

“We didn’t want to miss the city’s birthday party, although this year’s is not comparable to previous ones, when the crowd gathered, there were great concerts,” said the Kaunas couple, for whom Saturday’s events became an introduction to your personal Sunday.

Rejoicing on the 35th anniversary of their marriage, Kaunas residents said they left the car on the hill and descended into Laisv alley on foot, but due to the changing weather, they briefly regretted the decision. “While we were walking, a downpour fell!” – Laimutė and Valdemaras Datkūnai said, who caught the unexpected rain.

But the sky shone again and again. “Everything lifts your spirits. After the quarantine, everything is interesting,” said V. Datkūnas when asked about the most interesting birthday events for him and his wife Kaunas.

Simply walking and moving was relevant not just for this couple. Young parents Ieva and Mantas, who arrived from Rumšiškės with their one-month-old daughter, said that now their lives are changing according to a different rhythm: that of their daughter Patricia, not the events of the city.

Ieva is from Kaunas, so previously it was possible to get together at almost every birthday party in town. “But now the events of the pandemic are different,” the young mother tried to compare.

Shocked and rained

Not only the hustle and bustle of the city, but also various musical greetings and gifts kept happening in the city. The BandFest Kaunas 2021 festival program only covered a little!

Nine orchestras and their performances in open spaces of the city of Kaunas: Ąžuolynas, Kalniečiai, Santarvė, Santaka parks, Panemunė šile, Aleksotas, Žaliakalnis, Kaunas City Hall, Laisvės Alley, Šilainiai, Independence, Chechnya and Unity Squares, Presidential Garden.

There was also no lack of movement. The dancers ignored even the heavy rain. Hidden under the trees and umbrellas of Laisv Las Alley, the audience did not forgive the applause and stayed to watch the performances. Many have photographed and filmed these and other performances in memory. The orchestras playing from afar also forced the telephones to withdraw.

“It was an extreme spectacle. During so much rain. I thought I would wait until he was gone, but I continued, after short breaks he went out in the rain for more and more dances. Even after the injuries he continued. We saw that the dancer slipped”, shared Justina from Kaunas.

The rain from her and her friend Kirkoras didn’t scare her; at least she was morally prepared for everything, like many other Kaunas residents, who were not afraid of the weather forecasts.

“During the quarantine we got used to everything, we already became less spoiled,” joke the participants of the celebration.

There were fewer people in the Town Hall Square than in Vilnius Street, Laisvės Alley, Vienybės Square, V. Putvinskio Street, where life is boiling today.

The timer presented in the Town Hall Square gave more life to the city, which began to count the days, hours and minutes until the inaugural event of “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022” next year. Not much left to wait, just 223 days.
