Only the people closest to A. Didžiulis gathered to say the last “goodbye” on the limitations of the coronavirus: sons, daughters, grandchildren, a total of about 15 family members. J. Didžiulis and his wife Erica and children also arrived in the Colombian capital due to the loss.
A. Didžiulis was born in 1930 in Lithuania. Later, during World War II, he left his homeland. After finding themselves in Germany, George’s grandfather graduated from the gym there and earned money translating into German and French.
He arrived in Colombia in 1949. Algis’s future wife, Laima, also came here a year earlier. In a foreign country, it was necessary to start over, from the job of a cow milking supervisor. However, it was in the village that Laima met her father and later herself.
“When I first saw Laima, I knew he would direct her,” Didžiulis said in 2014.
Like many emigrants, Laima and his wife didn’t have many resources at the time, but the couple succeeded. Her husband graduated as an engineer, his wife as a physiotherapist and in 1999 he became honorary consul of Lithuania in Colombia.
“We dance under the bolero. Many young people don’t even know this genre now, “recalled Didžiuliai.
According to them, almost all educated Lithuanians lived in Latin America quite a few years later.
“You knew that you would be a common worker in the United States, and in Colombia, having learned the language of what I did in 6 months, you could work in a specialty. I don’t know anyone who lived as a poor person, “continued the story A. Didžiulis, who worked as an engineer.
Soon, A. Didžiulis managed to establish himself further – together with his brother he bought the Distral company, which became one of the most important and largest companies in Colombia. In a foreign country, siblings are valued not only as wealthy but also as leading entrepreneurs.
A. Didžiulis won recognition and awards in Lithuania for his achievements in contributing to the business development of the country. According to the family, one of their most important contributions to the benefit of Lithuania was solid assistance in the construction of the Klaipeda oil terminal. A. Didžiulis together with his brother took care not only of the necessary contacts, but also of finances. Relatives wanted Lithuania, which had been liberated from the Soviet Union, to experience energy independence as soon as possible.
A. Didžiulis also supported various diaspora activities and actively contributed to the Colombian community. In addition, it supported Lithuanian sports, for example, welcomed and accommodated professional cyclists. A. Didžiulis and his merits are still appreciated for the long-term support of the country’s athletes.
The 70-year-old man, who lived in Colombia, died on February 15 at the age of 91.
I remember, and in the warm message of a grandson
Earlier in the week, his grandson J. Didžiulis also spoke about the loss of his grandfather on social media.
“Early in the morning of February 15, Algis Didžiulis arrived at the last stop of the trip of his life. In Bogotá, we will escort him until the next one.
It is difficult to write a couple of sentences about Dieduka because the whole book can easily come out. I’m not kidding.
Diedukas emigrated from Lithuania during WWII penniless and became one of the richest people in Colombia. He fell in love, without exception, with a country that gave him “everything”, but never left Lithuania. He never forgot who he was.
During the years of occupation, he supported Lithuanian communities, emigrants and various initiatives, and during the time of independence he contributed to the reconstruction of Lithuania. By the way, you can thank him and his brother for the Klaipeda Oil Terminal, which ensured the initial “energy independence” of independent Lithuania.
Maybe she will share her bio later so you can imagine how much people do in their 91 years of life. There are many merits, achievements, adventures and unexpected events.
However, his biography does not say much about what he really was: a witty, empathetic, generous, playful, bloated and complex personality with a magical style, a sharp tongue and many “paniatkas”. He was a real character. The book could be written not because of what he did, but because he was a charismatic soul who is easy to love, ”wrote J. Didžiulis on Facebook.
