The Klaipėda lighthouse, which welcomes ships entering the seaport, was built and illuminated in 1796. It was one of the first lighthouses on the northeast coast of the Baltic.
During World War II, the lighthouse was destroyed, but in 1945 it was rebuilt. Then it was elevated, equipped with more reflectors. The lighthouse now emits light from a 40 m high tower.
Last year, the municipality of Neringa took over the Nida lighthouse on Cerro Urbas. The extinct and outdated navigation device is intended to be a tourist attraction for resort guests and tourists.
This opportunity also attracts the residents of Klaipeda. If the port city municipality took over and opened the Klaipėda lighthouse to the public, its purpose would not change: it would show the way for ships sailing to the port.
The historic lighthouse in the Klaipeda harbor is a closed object. In summer, the curious can visit it only once a year to commemorate World Lighthouse Day.
“After the municipality takes over the building, the LTSA specialists will continue to take care of the navigation equipment,” said Klaipėda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas.
This idea was supported by the Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis, who recently visited the coast. He does not rule out the possibility that all the problems can be solved next year and the lighthouse will become another tourist attraction.
