The Seimas is preparing a lot of innovations for smokers. All residents who smoke on the balconies must accept new rules and change their habits. After deliberation, the Seimas unanimously approved amendments to the law, which will make smoking on the balcony an illegal activity.
“The municipality hangs signs, informs that it is no longer possible to smoke on this staircase or in this apartment, in this house, because there is a person who suffers, a family. After a time, a warning and recording of the violation will take effect even at that time, ”said Seimas member Tomas Tomilinas.
If a neighbor ignores the smoking ban, they will be warned. For the second time, a fine will already be imposed for the violation.
“In Latvia, the fine is about 30 euros. A slightly higher number is suggested here. We are discussing, I think the fine will be 60-70 euros,” said T. Tomilinas.
According to the Department of Drug, Tobacco and Alcohol Control, such a ban will not only reduce the problem of secondhand smoke, but will also begin to change attitudes toward smoking. This is also supported by the Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga.
“There are significantly more non-smokers than smokers and there are many areas that are already regulated. For example, noise or other things that are regulated, really a person’s right to their home is not absolute.” A. Veryga is convinced.
This is not the only innovation for smokers. The Seimas seeks to ban smoking in all playgrounds and covered bus stops in the country. The outdoor cafes should also create separate areas for smoking and non-smoking customers.
It is true that most smokers should notice changes in stores. It is planned to hide cigarettes so that tobacco products do not harm the eyes of the population or affect them negatively.
The Seimas is preparing a lot of innovations for smokers.
“If kids don’t see these products, almost 90 percent immediately say they don’t think they’ll start smoking these products in the future.” And for adults, it would help those people who decided to quit smoking, and he comes to the store and doesn’t see these products, ”agrees Gražina Belian, director of the Department of Drug, Tobacco and Alcohol Control.
Cigarettes must be hidden in stores as of January 2022. It takes time for both the government, which has to ban all bans with the European Commission, and for stores, which have to reorganize their payments.
“Now enough time is given, everyone will be able to prepare and those curtains will not be necessary, they will not need any box under the table, everything will be in order so that it is convenient for the seller to deliver the product if the buyer buys,” said Rūta Vainienė.
It is not yet clear when the balcony no smoking rule will go into effect. The parliamentarians choose from two dates: the end of this summer and the next. The Seimas will have to vote again on all the amendments.
Admittedly, he expects MPs to change their minds a bit. The amendments have so far been approved by the majority of Seimas members.
