Iran: deal makes Bahrain an accessory to Israel’s “crimes”

Trump called it a “truly historic day” and said on Friday that Israel and Bahrain are establishing all diplomatic and trade relations.

“They will exchange embassies and ambassadors, launch direct flights between countries and launch cooperation initiatives in a wide range of sectors, including health, business, technology, education, security and agriculture,” he said.

Bahrain said in a joint statement that it agreed to formalize the agreement with Israel during a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday, when the UAE will also sign its agreement on relations with Israel, which was announced in mid-August.

Shiite-controlled Iran, whose relations with Bahrain are extremely strained and is a sworn enemy of Washington, condemned the neighborhood agreement on Saturday.

“From now on, the rulers of Bahrain will be complicit in the crimes of the Zionist regime as a constant threat to security in the region and the Islamic world,” Iran said.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese movement considered an ally of Iran, said the agreement was “a betrayal and a painful blow to the Palestinian people.”

The deal was also condemned by Turkey, which said it would “further encourage Israel to continue its illegal activities … and its attempts to make the occupation of the Palestinian territories permanent.”

The Sunni-ruled and Shiite-populated Kingdom of Bahrain is heavily dependent on the United States, which has deployed a fifth fleet of its navy to a small but strategically important Gulf archipelago.
