“We are happy that with the Ministry we were able to find a solution and distribute potassium iodide tablets to the residents of the city in a smooth way. We distribute the product through pharmacies that adhere to it in good faith. Although the risk of accident is very low and we hope that it is not necessary to use these tablets, the inhabitants of the city must be prepared ”, says Povilas Poderskis, director of the municipal administration of Vilnius city.

Distributed in the main pharmacy chains

It should be noted that e. The prescription issued by the Polyclinic Center of the Public Institution is a centralized prescription, which is legally required to be carried out by this personal health institution. The polyclinic of the center is already finalizing the last e. recipes for all residents who have declared their place of residence in Vilnius to receive potassium iodide tablets free of charge. Residents will be able to collect the tablets in the main pharmacy chains Camelia, Eurovaistinė, Gintarinė vaistinė, Norfos vaistinė and Benu upon presentation of an identity document. Along with the potassium iodide tablets, residents will receive instructions for use in Lithuanian, Russian, Polish and English.

We want to draw the attention of the population to the fact that electronic prescriptions for potassium iodide preparations are issued automatically. Therefore, it is not necessary to go to medical institutions. It is enough to go to the pharmacy and present an identity document. The electronic prescription is valid for 30 days, that is, until November 17.

It is emphasized that Vilnius residents should use potassium iodide tablets only in the event of a nuclear accident in a neighboring country and only if the competent state authorities provide such recommendations.

A declared place of residence in Vilnius is required

People who live in Vilnius, but have not declared their place of residence in the capital, will not be able to receive tablets for free. For whatever reason, those who cannot, will simply be able to purchase potassium iodide tablets from pharmacies on their own.

If for objective reasons (such as disability) the patient cannot reach the pharmacy himself, the potassium iodide tablets that belong to him may be taken by the patient’s representative, who has presented the identity document of the person represented at the pharmacy.

How to deal with an emergency

The municipality recalls that the nuclear power plant that will start operating in Belarus is located 45 km from Vilnius. The Lithuanian capital is within a 100 km radius zone, where the population could be advised to take potassium iodide tablets in case of a nuclear power plant disaster. If an accident occurred at the Belarusian nuclear power plant, during which radioactive materials were released into the environment, the Lithuanian authorities would inform the public immediately. In the event of a nuclear accident, Vilnius residents would be warned about it in three ways: by audible sirens, short warning messages to mobile phones, and by radio, television and other media. In the event of such an emergency, it is recommended to close the facilities and wait for notifications from the public authorities on what actions and measures to take to reduce the risk. At this stage, the population would also be informed about the need to take potassium iodide tablets.

In the event of a nuclear accident, the evacuation of the population takes place within a radius of 30 km from the reactor. As Vilnius is at a greater distance from the Belarusian nuclear power plant (45 km), in case of emergency, Vilnius residents must first stay home, go out, follow the radio and television information and wait for further instructions: yes take pills, wear respiratory protection, evacuate, etc. .
