These tablets are distributed to the population as a preventive measure due to the commissioning of the Astrava nuclear power plant in Belarus. They are designed to protect the thyroid gland from the harmful effects of radioactive iodine.
It is emphasized that Vilnius residents should use potassium iodide tablets only in the event of a nuclear accident in a neighboring country and only if such recommendations are provided by the competent state authorities.
Earlier it was announced that in the event of an accident at the Astrava nuclear power plant that released radioactive materials into the environment, the Lithuanian authorities would immediately inform the population through audible sirens, short warning messages to mobile phones and radio, television and others. media.
In the event of such a disaster, it is recommended to close the room and wait for notifications from the public authorities on what actions and measures to take to reduce the risk. At this stage, the population would also be informed about the need to take potassium iodide tablets.
In the event of a nuclear accident, the evacuation of the population takes place within a radius of 30 kilometers from the reactor.
According to the Municipality of Vilnius, as the capital of the country is larger, that is, 45 kilometers from Astrava, in case of emergency, Vilnius residents must first stay at home, go out, follow the information on radio and television and wait for further instructions: if taking pills, wear respiratory protection. , evacuate.
In total, the Ministry of Health has distributed 4 million. potassium iodide tablets in 16 municipalities located 100 kilometers from the Astrava nuclear power plant in Belarus.
