Inspection: in financial and insurance institutions, women earn less due to the nature of their work

The VDI, which conducted 20 unscheduled inspections, said Monday that it had found that not all employees received the same salary for the same work or of equal value.

“In most audited institutions, men and women tend to divide into individual departments: women dominate the customer service sector, which generally has the lowest wages, while the number of male employees tends to be significantly greater than the number of women in IT salaries. ” , – establishes the VDI report.

According to the inspection, however, the main differences are “for the benefit of both sexes and for objective reasons,” that is. due to different qualifications, education, professional experience, characteristics of the subject, behavior and other aspects of the employees.

The SLI points out that there is also a significant gap between the minimum and maximum wages approved in certain payment systems for the same category or position, which can lead to discrimination based on sex or other reasons, since the decision on wages the manager takes it. According to the SLI, this “may mean a subjective evaluation of a particular employee.”

Although the Labor Code does not require the adoption of criteria for the selection, recruitment and evaluation of employees as separate documents, their absence, according to the SLI, may also “presuppose a subjective evaluation of a specific case and discrimination on the basis of gender and other motives”.

The Inspection also notes that measures for the implementation of the equal opportunities policy in many places “do not always help to effectively implement the equal opportunities policy for employees” because they are formal, created “by the declarative implementation of the rules legal. “

Inspectors have also identified good examples, such as the fact that in some institutions the review of wages takes into account which gender of employees dominates in terms of the wages they receive.

“In this case, the wages of employees of the opposite sex are further increased to reduce the wage gap between employees of different sexes,” confirms the inspection.

Good measures include a salary audit, an analysis of the salary gap with the participation of employee representatives, monitoring the number of men and women who have participated in training, business trips, etc.

According to the Inspection, Lietuvos Draudimas, Gjensidige and the Lithuanian branch of ERGO Insurance SE apply effective measures to reduce the wage gap between men and women.

Summarizing the results of the inspections carried out due to the large salary gap between men and women in financial and insurance institutions, there were no signs of direct discrimination due to the salary gap between men and women.

According to the latest data from the Lithuanian Department of Statistics for 2018, the gender pay gap in financial and insurance companies in Lithuania was 37%.
