Meanwhile, Dan managed to land the damaged glider himself, landing in a farm field near the forest. Other members of the Danish team landed next to him to help him.

Doctors who arrived at the scene inspected the pilots, but did not need more serious help – Dan paid scared, the Lithuanian – with scratches all over his body.

The competition was stopped, other athletes competing in the air were given a team to fly to the Pociūnai airfield in the Prienai district, from where they had all taken the competition stage this morning.

According to Vladas Motūzas, president of the Lithuanian Gliding Federation, the incident took place in the air at approximately 15 hours 30 minutes.

According to the initial assumptions, the collision could have been caused by the error of the Lithuanian pilot, but the exact cause of the accident will be determined by the investigation, which, according to the president of the Federation, has already begun.

V. Motūza stated that I. Bitinaitis is considered a good glider: the young man won second place at the World Junior Gliding Championships four years ago.

The broken glider is the private property of V. Motūzai. Its value is about 60 thousand. euros. The owner stated that the vehicle is insured.

“The most important thing is that everything ended happily, the drivers are healthy and alive. We will discover the reason for the collision in the air to learn lessons for the future. We will continue the competition tomorrow, but probably in a smaller line-up than before, ”V. Motūza told Delfi.

The European Youth Gliding Championship started at Pociūnai airport in the Prienai district on July 10, with 44 youngsters from 11 countries: Lithuania, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. . The championship will run until July 24.
