The Foreign Affairs Committee (URK) of the Seimas adopted on Wednesday a statement calling for the rigged elections in Belarus, proposing not to recognize Aliaksandr Lukashenko as the legitimate leader of Belarus.
“The Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee, stressing that the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9, 2020 were rigged, (…) calls on the Seimas and other responsible Lithuanian institutions not to recognize the results of the elections in Belarus and President Lukashenko as the legitimate leader of Belarus. ” – says the document.
After a closed session, conservative committee member Sigismund Pavilionis emphasized that the statement on Belarus had been adopted by consensus.
“The CEC confirmed that we do not recognize these elections as official and for the first time in Lithuania’s history we say that we do not consider A. Laukashenko the legitimate leader of Belarus. This was done with the approval of all parties.” Ž. Pavilion.
“Consequently, we will call on the parliaments of all other democracies to adopt a similar position and demand new elections together with the EU,” he said.
The declaration proposes, together with the European Union, that “new transparent and fully democratic presidential elections be held in Belarus”.
Furthermore, the immediate release of all imprisoned members of the opposition and civil society, an end to the use of force against peaceful protesters, and the guarantee of press, assembly and other political and civil rights in Belarus.
The statement proposes that the government consider imposing national sanctions on officials responsible for rigged elections and violence, and seek common sanctions for the European Union.
Belarusian authorities said Monday that President Lukashenko had won 80 percent of the vote. votes and is re-elected for another term.
Protests against falsification of election results soon broke out in Belarus. Opposition candidate Sviatlana Cichanouskaya arrived in Lithuania from Belarus on Tuesday.
