After the young man’s life was extinguished on March 12 in the Santara clinics of the Vilnius University Hospital, after talking with the doctors, his parents agreed to donate all the appropriate organs for a very noble goal: to save and preserve other lives.
Studies have shown that almost all possible organs and tissues are suitable for transplantation: heart, liver, kidneys and corneas. To save as many people as possible, pairs of kidney and cornea are transplanted to different recipients, so donated healthy organs and tissues saved up to six seriously ill patients. After a long waiting period, they have been given the opportunity for a second life or a significantly improved quality of life.
The transplant process, which began on Friday, took place throughout the weekend. Several medical brigades carried out complex operations in both transplant centers in Lithuania. The implantation procedures (removal of organs) began on Saturday morning.
The heart, kidneys and a cornea were transplanted in the VUL Santara clinics, the liver and a cornea were transplanted in the Kaunas clinics of the Lithuanian Health Sciences Hospital.
“I express my condolences and gratitude to the parents for such a noble decision during the most difficult hour of the loss of the child. – says Artūras Bagotyrius, director of the National Transplant Office of the Ministry of Health, which coordinates transplants. – I would also like to thank the doctors, who do not count the time when performing transplants, they perform difficult surgeries on weekends – they sacrifice rest, time with their family.
They do a really noble and hard job. Life-saving operations are time-consuming and extremely complex. Thanks to the determination of the family and the dedication of the doctors, we can report that up to six people have hoped to live a quality life again this weekend. After all, it is invaluable. “
This year 17 potential donors have registered. This is the second minor donor.
In 2020, 3 effective juvenile donors were registered, whose organs saved the lives of up to five other children.
Any adult resident of Lithuania can consent to organ donation by signing a consent for their organs and tissues to be removed and donated for transplantation after death. This can be done online at https://ntb.lt, in all medical institutions, pharmacies “Eurovaistinė”. After signing said consent, the person receives a symbolic donor card.
