In the face of the pandemic, a dangerous trend has emerged: if this continues, we will not only be victims of the coronavirus

Vidmantas Šiugždinis, Member of the Board of Directors of the Lithuanian Health Club Association, Povilas Poderskis, Director of the Vilnius City Municipal Administration and Dr. Dalius Barkauskas, Deputy Minister of Health Kristina Gauruolienė.

V. Šiugždinis says that physical activity is universally recognized as one of the ways to strengthen public health. So, he says, when people stop moving, there are immediately more risks and all their other passive activities contribute to the onset of chronic diseases.

“For example, there is data from the UK that indicates that more than 70% of people in intensive resuscitation were overweight. We see that these people are at high risk. People have to move, and I think that’s very important and it’s a bit worrying that no one in health is talking about it. “

When asked how health clubs in general have been operating since the beginning of the pandemic, a board member of the Lithuanian Health Clubs Association said they had closed them first.

“Since March 13. Sports clubs were already completely closed in Lithuania and opened only on May 18. So there really was a long break from total inactivity and loss of income. Sure, at that time, sports clubs They were trying to organize remote training, working with clients who were leaving, but we can see that people are passive. It’s very difficult to get people out onto the field, especially now during the cold season. “

He said that neither the people themselves are active according to Google mobility nor do they play sports at home, and only a fraction of the people who went to sports clubs participate in distance training.

“Actually, sports clubs are trying to engage people without acting, but it is quite challenging. More state policies and even rhetoric are needed for people to play sports, move, and find their own way.

How not to lose motivation to play sports during a pandemic?

According to V. Šiugždinis, many exercises can be performed without special equipment, using your body weight.

“In any case, it is good for the cardiovascular system. Just the movement, the cardiovascular exercises are already very good. If a person were to do it for at least 20-30 minutes a day, it would certainly have a very positive and positive effect on their entire physical condition, not to mention their mental and emotional health.

Therefore, it is possible to play sports without exercise machines, but most people do not have the motivation and knowledge. That is why coaches try to give it, but it is much more difficult to transfer energy, to involve a person remotely. Of course it is possible and it is happening, only a smaller number are doing it. “

However, how to develop that motivation when there is a pandemic in the country, everything is closed and nowhere can you go out normally, show yourself to someone or look at others? Dr. D. Barkauskas commented that, first of all, it must be said that Lithuania is very late with all these things.

“Several epidemiologists have been very reluctant to say that all epithelial viruses have seasonality. It was clear that autumn would not bring anything good. It took preparation and we did nothing. In other words, most of the homework was not done.

The first thing when evaluating that risk group that is more vulnerable and more serious, the 18 to 64 years old, with nothing yet, is some type of movement. But let’s not forget that there is another group, people between 15 and 17 years old. This group of children, broader from 5 to 17 years old, is very vulnerable. Distance learning, distance learning, causes total chaos. “

In their view, there is already a tragedy for the children’s movement in general, with military doctors also pointing out that a third of recruits are unfit to serve and the problem runs much deeper.

“From my practice, I can say that I had at least two teenagers who gained 10 to 15 kilograms during the first quarantine. What does this mean? They were active, they played sports, but suddenly everything closed down and eating habits and other things changed, so this group is very vulnerable ”.

According to D. Barkauskas, the pandemic only exacerbates all these long-standing problems, so we should talk about physical activity and physical literacy.

“Physical literacy is precisely that motivation, security, a certain level of knowledge that allows a person to understand who needs that physical activity in general and what to do with it. It also allows you to continue with the activities you started ”.

Is it possible to find a balance between a healthy lifestyle and managing a pandemic?

According to the Deputy Minister of Health, Kristina Gauruolienė, being physically active is very important, but the current situation is such that everyone has to worry about seeing the daily number of coronavirus cases.

“Also, when we see how many people die every day, we realize that the habits we had when attending sports clubs should change. Paradoxically, the current situation is that the less we move, we communicate, we do not contact, the better we handle the virus ”.

However, when asked if it is possible to find a balance between a healthy lifestyle and the management of the pandemic, or if the absence of such activities will not cause more problems in the state in the future, the deputy minister wanted to remind one thing about sports clubs.

“When people do sports, they still breathe actively, there are also many people who visit, those contacts are difficult to trace afterwards, so there is a great possibility of getting infected there. Therefore, it is a very complicated management and not only in Lithuania , but also in all countries, sports clubs are the place to be abandoned first ”.

He also highlighted the need to find ways to do sports, because immobility will have other consequences, but now we are talking about a transformational change.

“We realize that maybe the pattern of our physical activity that we’ve developed so far should change a bit, so maybe people will reconsider how they play sports.”

However, when asked why sports clubs are not continuing to open, they asked to take into account statistics on deaths from coronavirus. According to the deputy minister, the goal remains that people do not mix from different backgrounds.

P. Poderskis, director of the Vilnius municipality administration, said that his attitude was always to trust the data. Now, he says, those numbers no longer appear to be increasing, but they are still high.

“The NVSC (National Center for Public Health – Delfi) cannot work normally and does not fully carry out epidemiological investigations. We spoke to them to help them, but they are reluctant to share their workload. So, in fact, there are many problems, but we should still think about how we can live as normally as possible in the presence of the virus. “

He said that the case for sports clubs is such that people there could actually play sports and everyone would be registered there.

“So, there is a clear system and it is not an open and free concert that people go to, and that way the infection could be controlled. Therefore, in this sense, the sports club is one of the safest places in its essence. Now of course everything else is group training. It should be understood that this quarantine does everything, just do not sit at home. That means they don’t need to go to work and now we’re seeing how many infections there are. “

According to Mr. Podersky, we should sit down with the company and talk about this, because he himself admits that all attention is currently focused on the management and hospitalization of COVID-19.
