In Lithuania, the strawberry season: how much will it cost to pick the berries yourself?

The first berries, ripe under the coat, began to be harvested on June 16. Last year, that day was June 9. There used to be an even earlier season – it was that trading started in late May.

Farmer V. Guzelis says that the bulk price of strawberries on his farm is similar to the previous year: 2 to 2.5 euros per kilogram.

Everything the traders ask for in the market or elsewhere is up to them. Berries are more expensive at outlets near the road: a kilogram of the former costs 5 euros. On the market, the euro is cheaper.

Those who want to save V. Guzel’s strawberry in Obeliai can go to the berries themselves. One kilogram of the berries will cost around 1.5 euros. Of course, no one checks how many strawberries go to the stomach in a hurry, so people are happy to take this opportunity and even come from other areas.

V.Guzelis is the largest strawberry producer in Ukmergė and one of the largest in the country. This crop has planted an area of 10 hectares. Man has been involved in such activities for almost three decades.

A farmer with extensive experience in growing berries said that nature stirs new surprises every year, one year – cold spring, the second – big frosts, hail or drought that dries up the plants, the third – rain and cold or – and so on. and that … Certainly, skills are not always adaptable.

For example, this year’s harvest was not only delayed, but the spring rains leached nitrogen from the soil. As a result, the berries need additional fertilization. The onset of scorching heat is proof that this business is not possible without an irrigation system.
