In Lithuania, the death rate from COVID-19 is one of the highest in the EU

Lithuanian doctors emphasize that such differences in indicators may have been caused by different testing strategies, morbidity of different age groups, vaccination volumes or mortality that has not yet been able to respond to the rising morbidity curve in other countries.

However, they claim that this may also be related to the general state of health in Lithuania.

“One of the things we could emphasize is that the general health status of Lithuanians is a little worse than that of Westerners and Scandinavians. But in general, we should look very carefully at the data, make sure the scale of the tests is the same, assess the age of the patients, ”Valdas Pečeliūnas, deputy director of medicine at the Santara Clinics, told BNS on Tuesday.

“Vaccination is another important factor. (…) Looking only at those initial numbers, you can’t really draw conclusions, “he added.

According to ECDC data, in the last two weeks the rate of new cases in Lithuania has reached almost 322 cases per 100,000. population. According to this indicator, the country ranks seventh in the Community.

Meanwhile, in the past two weeks, one million Lithuanians have died from nearly 45 deaths from COVID-19. According to this indicator, the country is the third in the European Union.

In Ireland, Estonia, and Slovenia, the incidence rates are higher than in Lithuania, but in terms of deaths, these countries are much lower.

In these countries, the vaccination rates of the elderly population are better than in Lithuania. This problem has been repeatedly highlighted by the opposition, which has called for a more specific vaccination campaign.

Tomas Tamošuitis, director of the Kaunas Clinics’ Intensive Care Clinic, also stated that more data is needed for a more in-depth analysis, but emphasized that the health status of the country’s population could be one of the objective factors.

“Lithuania also has one of the highest cardiovascular mortality rates in Europe. In general, this is people’s medical awareness, understanding of diseases and their prevention is very well reflected here, ”said the doctor.

Hospitals are dominated by the unvaccinated

As the epidemiological situation in the country deteriorates, hospitals fill up and the number of deaths increases. According to the Santara clinics, one or more people have recently died from coronavirus every day at this treatment center.

“Currently, we already have one or two patients with covid who die every day and two or three patients without covid. Until recently, deaths related to covid were isolated and not daily. (…) Let’s say this: deaths from covidia are becoming one of the most common causes of death in our hospital, “said V. Pečeliūnas.

According to him, hospitals are currently dominated by the unvaccinated population. They are also mostly found among the dying. As for those vaccinated who are sick, almost all are elderly or have comorbidities.

“Even vaccination does not protect those patients from the most difficult outcomes. If we are talking about those people who died from covidium after vaccination, then there were no people who belonged to the category of under 60 years and who did not have comorbidities. serious ”, explained the doctor.

For his part, T. Tamošuitis says that although the number of patients in hospitals is increasing, the impact of vaccination is obvious.

“Last week 10 patients arrived, one of whom was vaccinated. But this is a man who really is a very respectable age, close to a hundred years old. It is natural that at this age the immunity does not develop sufficiently ”, said the head of the Intensive Care Clinic.

According to him, vaccines alone cannot fully protect people at risk of a serious form of illness or death, they must take care of themselves: keep their distances, wear a mask.

“A smart approach to life right now would really help those people,” Tamošuitis said.

COPID-19 hospitals currently serve 857 people, 85 of whom are in resuscitation.

A total of 4,721 people have died from COVID-19 to date, of which 59 have been fully vaccinated. 9,479 deaths have been directly and indirectly linked to COVID-19.
