“The idea of this installation is quite simple, but very symbolic. The hero of the nation is considered Č. Sugihara is associated with peace, he has helped save many lives, so the winches that fly from the palms of his hand give meaning to the idea of humanity that he spread ”, said designer R. Kalinkin.
Thousands of winches, symbols of happiness, peace and dreams, were folded on paper and sent to Kaunas by communities in Lithuania and Japan, thus consolidating the friendship between Lithuanians and Japanese that has been cherished for many years. The dreams of those who are flexible written on the wings of the winches symbolize the desire to overcome the troubles that have befallen the world together, according to a press release.

According to the author of the idea, the volunteers threaded each winch on the ropes from the end of September, then hung them on a metal frame and combined them with a sculpture, which V. Viržbickas created by hand for more than a month. A team of about 40 people worked on the implementation of the installation in Vilnius and Kaunas and of course all the flexible winches.
“One of the most important ideas of Sugihara Week is to unite nations through joint projects. This year, with the sudden increase in distances between countries due to the pandemic, we have faced challenges that have forced us to seek new solutions and forms of cooperation. The art installation of paper winches is probably the most beautiful example of that cooperation, ”says Aurelijus Zykas, president of the Kaunas-Japan Friendship Association.
The art installation in Kaunas “Akropolis” will be available until mid-November, then the paper winches will be housed by the “Kaunas 2022” team. Finally, the canine therapy center, which will visit birds from all over Lithuania while visiting the little ones with their pets.
