Trier Mayor Wolfram told regional broadcaster SWR SWR on Tuesday that the driver appeared to have started to “get furious.”

“It just came to our attention then. He was unable to escape and was detained by the police,” said K.-P. Jochem.
In statements to reporters with tears in his eyes, the mayor spoke about the shock he experienced in the street when he saw a child’s shoe next to the body of a girl.
“It was a horrible sight,” he said. “He hurt a lot of people.”
Police spokesman Uwe Konz told AFP news agency that it was not yet clear what exactly happened.
“The facts have yet to be clarified,” he added.
Christmas trade
Steffen Seibert, a spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, called the incident “shocking” on Twitter. According to him, the whole country is with “relatives of the victims, many injured and those who help to take care of the victims.”
Land Interior Minister Roger Lewentz is expected to hold a press conference later.
Several police minibuses and other ambulance cars parked on a wide shopping street were seen from the scene during an NTV television broadcast.
Shoppers flocked to the stores decorated for Christmas and sirens echoed in the distance.
Trier is about 200 km west of Frankfurt, near the Luxembourg border.
About 110 thousand. The inhabited city is famous for the Roman gate Porta Nigra, located near the crash site and as the birthplace of Karl Marx.
Trier is often called the oldest city in Germany.
Wishes in the fight against the second wave of the coronavirus, Germany closed its restaurants, bars, sports and entertainment centers, but the retail stores remained open and the Christmas sales had already started.
Although it has not yet been confirmed that it was a terrorist attack, the incident revived memories of the 2016 attack, when a truck fatally injured 12 people at a Christmas fair in Berlin. Trucker Anis Amri, an unsuccessful Tunisian asylum seeker, supported the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).
A few days later, the police shot him in Milan. This attack is considered the bloodiest by an Islamist group in Germany.
In August, six people were injured during a series of accidents in Berlin, which prosecutors call an alleged Islamist attack.
