The country’s disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), said on Friday that 29,875 new cases had been confirmed in the country in the past 24 hours. That number surpasses the previous daily record of 23,679 cases announced Thursday.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 increased from 598 to 20,970. The previous record number of daily deaths was 590; was registered on Wednesday.

The German Länder are responsible for announcing and lifting the restrictions. Chancellor Angela Merkel called for action earlier this week, saying that “a decisive, possibly decisive phase had been reached in the fight against the pandemic.”

There are currently no restaurants, bars, sports and leisure facilities in the country, and hotels are closed to tourists. However, schools and nonessential stores continue to operate.

Merkel urged provincial governments to consider closing schools before Christmas and should soon discuss possible new measures with regional leaders.

Several lands have already announced new restrictions. Baden-Württemberg announced on Friday that it will extend the quarantine measures until at least January 10.
