“We are forced to act, so we are acting now,” Merkel said, emphasizing the need to preserve the country’s health system.

The stricter quarantine restrictions run until January 10, and companies are also encouraged to allow employees to work from home or extend leave. The new restrictions and recommendations were adopted after a meeting between Merkel and the leaders of the 16 German Länder.

The sale of alcoholic beverages in public places will also be prohibited, so it will not be possible to operate hot wine shops that are extremely popular during the Christmas period.

“The coronavirus situation is out of control,” Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soeder said, welcoming the restrictions.

In Germany, a partial quarantine had been applied for six weeks, during which bars and restaurants were closed, but shops and schools were generally open. It is true that in some regions of the country, due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, stricter restrictions have been introduced.

These restrictions have helped curb some of the increase in morbidity after the fall break in schools across the country, but failed to scale back the outbreak.

However, last week, experts warned that the trend had turned negative again.

“With the increase in population movement and the number of contacts before Christmas, Germany is currently experiencing an exponential increase in the number of diseases,” says Merkel and a draft agreed between regional leaders.

Thus, according to Merkel, “our task is to avoid congestion in the health system, so we must act.”
