In China, 57 new cases of coronavirus infection were confirmed, mainly since April

With the government imposing strict quarantine measures, the internal outbreak in China was largely contained earlier this year, but the new outbreak is related to the meat and vegetable market in southern Beijing.

The National Health Commission reported that 36 of the new cases are non-imported cases identified in the capital.

Two other non-imported cases reported Sunday were identified in Liaoning province, in the northeast part of the country, and local health officials said the infected people had contact with infected people in Beijing.

As a result of these cases, new restrictive measures were taken and residents of eleven Beijing districts near the market were ordered to stay home.

The cases identified are the first in Beijing in the past two months.

Reporters from the AFP news agency reported seeing hundreds of police officers dispatched to the property, many wearing masks and gloves, as well as dozens of paramilitary police.

New cases have raised concerns about the security of the food supply chain and some other urban markets have also closed.

Authorities responsible for overseeing Beijing markets have ordered food safety inspections across the city, with a special focus on fresh and frozen meat, poultry and fish in supermarkets, warehouses and catering establishments.

Nine nearby schools and kindergartens were closed, and Beijing delayed the return of students to primary schools. Other restrictions have also been taken.

The remaining cases, which were reported on Sunday, are imported: the infected are Chinese citizens returning from abroad.
