Greta Thunberg, 17-year-old Swedish environmental activist, July 20. Announced the winner of the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity in 2006, declared its monetary value – 1 million. Eur – donating to organizations working on the environment and climate change.
The Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian Prize (1869–1955), a British businessman and philanthropist of Armenian descent, was established in 1976 as a science prize for Portuguese individuals and organizations. The prize is awarded in 1956. After the businessman’s death, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was established in Lisbon to improve people’s lives through art, charity, science and education.
Since 2012 the foundation has also launched a special international award for those who fight for human rights.
Not the first time
“All prize money through the My Name Fund will be donated to various organizations and projects aimed at helping people affected by the climate and ecological crisis, especially in third world countries,” Gret Thunberg was quoted as CNBC.
He announced in January this year that he was creating his own non-profit fund to manage the movement’s financial affairs: books, donations, and cash prizes.
“The objective of the foundation will be to promote ecological, climatic and social sustainability, as well as mental health,” wrote the student on social media at the time.
Nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, Thunberg, founder of the global movement Fridays for the Future, added that the money would also “help organizations and projects that fight for a sustainable world and protect nature.”
According to CNBC, the environmental activist intends to allocate 100,000 euros to the SOS Amazonia campaign, led by “Friday for the future of Brazil”, to help mitigate the effects of COVID-19. Another 100,000 euros will go to the Stop Ecocide fund.
This is not the first time that Thunberg has donated funds to organizations. In April of this year, she donated $ 100,000 of the Danish Human Rights Law to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The coronavirus pandemic, like the climate crisis, is a child rights crisis,” the UNICEF report said, citing an activist in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018 to launch a global movement against climate change.

According to CNBC, Mr. Thunberg announced the environmental award at a time when Royal Holloway, part of the University of London, had published research by the Zoological Society of London and the Museum of Natural History that “painted a vivid image as A plastic pollution affects the River Thames in London. “
One of the three studies found that 94,000 units of microplastic flowed per second in some parts of the river at high tide, when the water from the Thames empties into the sea. Another study claims that about 95% of hair follicles in crabs from the tested haircuts found plastic lumps.
