Readers of the tv3.lt portal shared an ad in which the agricultural company Vikebas, located in the Pasvalys district, announces that it is looking for a cow milker, is offered a salary of 1,900 euros and a veterinary paramedic is offered a salary of 2,600 euros on paper.
The ad says the work is being done in a friendly team. All social guarantees are also provided and the salary is paid on time. If necessary, residential space is provided.
The owner of this company confirmed that he was looking for employees, but was laconic.
“The work continues, nobody leaves, and we are paying the employees as much as we can, but not everyone wants to work,” said the manager.
Wages increase every year
Andrius Pranckevičius, vice president of the board of Linas Agro Group, noted that wages in agriculture are increasing every year, the main reason for which is the shortage of employees.
“Employees of various qualifications are sought for agricultural work, both ordinary workers who perform a certain function and employees in higher positions whose qualifications must be higher.
For example, in the field, a tractor can be driven by a simple driver. We often come to work with heavy truck workers who no longer want to take long business trips. However, that person would no longer be able to work as an agronomist, because that job already requires specific knowledge, ”explained A. Pranckevičius.
According to him, in rural areas workers have to compete.
“It has never been in our company that we cannot find the required employee for months. But a few years ago, when we retired farm managers, we had a difficult time finding a shift for them. An employee has been looking for an employee for this position for a couple of years. So while such a long search was carried out, a farm manager had to supervise two farms. So this case was the most memorable.
However, we found other employees fairly quickly and managed to attract young specialists as well. We buy apartments from them and take care of the house. The employees have not yet built a separate house, but it may be that in the future, ”said A. Pranckevičius.
Still, he said, workers are likely to be attracted to a competitive salary.
“People want the same wages as in the cities, they do not want to receive less. Therefore, the average wage of agricultural workers on paper is 1,500 euros,” said A. Pranckevičius.
It is almost impossible to find employees during the season.
Raimundas Juknevičius, president of the Lithuanian Farmers Union, said he sympathized with farmers who are currently looking for employees during the working year.
“We have always had a large number of unemployed in Lithuania. However, there are still no people willing to work with each other. In general, due to emigration abroad or simply to the big cities, the population of the town has decreased, so the labor force is difficult to find.
It is even more difficult to find qualified workers. After all, in agriculture, both tractors and combines and other equipment are becoming modern and computerized. Therefore, a person who has not even finished high school will generally have a difficult time understanding technical management, ”noted R. Juknevičius.
According to him, nothing can be hired, because the job requires expensive equipment.
“An employee must protect, safeguard and maintain the property entrusted to him. That is why we need qualified and understanding personnel. And during the season, finding a worker through a harvest without offering him a high salary is an impossible mission.
Farmers also provide workers and accommodation. We are trying to attract employees by all means, ”said the farmer representative.
