Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė urges people to focus and follow instructions a few hours before stricter quarantine requirements take effect.
“There are no easy solutions at this time, they affect everyone. However, only by working together can we overcome this difficult period faster,” said the Head of Government in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“Then the government will be able to relax the restrictions sooner and it will do so with great pleasure. And now I thank all those who assess the threat of the virus and follow the instructions,” he added.
In Lithuania, a stricter quarantine regime came into effect on Wednesday, during which many shops, hair salons were closed and the movement of people restricted.
Pharmacies and grocery stores will be able to continue their operations, but they will not be prohibited from selling other products either. Food trade will only be allowed in markets, independent non-food stores will have to close.
Starting Wednesday, contact services for more than 15 minutes will also not be available and there will be no public services in churches.
According to the prime minister, the regular celebration of Christmas this year would provide opportunities for the spread of the coronavirus.
“We look forward to Christmas this year more than ever. We miss communion, the hustle and bustle and just hug the loved one. We lost a normal life, as it was a year ago. However, the usual things that happened before Christmas in the current circumstances they would help the virus to spread and result in loss of life, ”said I. Šimonytė.
He stressed that hospitals are currently overcrowded, doctors are tired and “every hour we lose one or two Lithuanian people who had the virus.”
According to I. Šimonytė, “every day we lose those who could still live, but due to the difficult situation in the hospitals, they did not receive the necessary treatment in time.”
“They are not just numbers, they are people: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends. So please everyone, let’s stop and stay home. Let’s help doctors save lives. And at the same time save them ourselves. without creating conditions for the virus to spread, ”said the Prime Minister.
“We can only overcome a pandemic by concentrating, only together, postponing what we can postpone, communicating at a distance, wearing masks, disinfecting our hands, keeping our distance,” he added.
I. Šimonytė said that he would like to thank the doctors and teachers and those who had to stop doing business or work temporarily, as well as the volunteers, social workers who will help single people, parents and older adults, children, for their understanding, patience and dedication.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Soon they will be available to those who need it most and later to everyone else. The most important battle remained. I have no doubt that only with concentration we will win it,” said I. Šimonytimony.
