In June 2019, the Energy Ministry approved an action plan aimed at eliminating unsafe LPG cylinders in apartment buildings by the end of 2022. Those who wish can receive non-reimbursable state support, which was allocated 15 million. euros.
Still, compatriots are in no rush to get dangerous gas cylinders out of their homes. According to Alina Žilinaitė, chief communication specialist at the Energy Ministry, last year only 309 apartment buildings used state support, and significantly less funds were spent on it than planned: 4.5 million. euros.
“The use of these cylinders in multi-apartment buildings is extremely dangerous and the residents who use them, despite legal and safety requirements, risk their own health and safety, as well as how to replace them with safe alternatives,” he says A. Žilinaitė.
This year, it is planned to allocate 10 million LTL for the replacement of gas cylinders by alternative energy sources. euros. According to the data available to the Ministry, more than 1.5 thousand. Gas cylinders are still used in apartment buildings.

Endangers all the occupants of the house
According to the Ministry of Energy, those who wish to exchange their used gas cylinders for another safer source of energy should contact a multi-apartment maintenance company, an association or another municipal company that takes care of the economy of several apartments. The latter, in turn, can request compensation and the occupants of the house decide by vote which alternative energy source to choose: electricity or natural gas.
The project is open to multi-apartment buildings with three and more stories, according to the Records Center excerpt, as well as two-story public buildings with housing.
Aistė Griškonytė, representative of the State Energy Regulatory Authority (VERT), explains to tv3.lt why LPG cylinders are considered dangerous.
“Gas cylinders used in apartment buildings of three or more stories pose a threat not only to the residents of the apartment, but also to the residents of the entire apartment building. In the event of an accident, a large part of the population and their properties may suffer, as well as the difficult liquidation of the consequences of such accidents, ”says A. Griškonytė.
VERT also announces that the difference between the price of liquefied petroleum gas sold in 50-liter cylinders and the price of electricity that we would pay to cook in an induction cooker is minimal. Electricity is, on average, only 0.90 euros more per month more expensive to cook.
At the same time, it is much more convenient: it is not necessary to change gas cylinders and operate them according to the established requirements, and therefore incur additional costs.
The project will continue
According to the Ministry of Energy, in 2021. The possible support for an apartment will amount to 726 euros. The total amount will be divided into three parts: for the conversion of electrical or gas engineering systems in general in apartment buildings, for the conversion of electrical or gas systems into flats, and for the purchase of an electric or gas stove , 242 euros each.
The first calls for proposals will be published on February 26. and are accepted until June 1, so residents, administrators and communities of apartment buildings that still use gas cylinders are invited to prepare applications, announces the energy ministry.
All projects will be evaluated immediately after the application is submitted, so projects will start faster. Selection will be possible sooner if full funding for the call for proposals can be allocated on the basis of project funding decisions taken and new applications submitted.
An incident was recorded
According to the VERT representative A. Griškonytė, according to tv3.lt, last year an accident related to the LPG gas cylinder was recorded.
At the beginning of the year, an explosion occurred in Elektrėnai Township, Daugirdiškės village, during which the house completely collapsed and two people were injured.
The explosion was suspected to be caused by a disorderly gas leak from the cylinder. The owner of the house, his children, were injured in the explosion and were taken to hospital for multiple injuries.
VERT representative A. Griškonytė advises tv3.lt what to do with a gas leak from a gas cylinder:
- take the gas cylinder to a safe place (not less than 40 m from buildings, open fire sources, basements, wells, wells from the wind side) and gradually release the gas from the gas cylinder;
- If the gas cylinder is connected or its valve does not close, bend the hose behind the pressure regulator, cut it, remove the cylinder and discharge the gas as described above.
- In case of fire, bend the hose behind the pressure regulator and, after cutting it, take the gas cylinder out into the field.
- If the gas cylinder valve nozzle and reducer are not leaking, close the valve and tighten the nut. If the gas leak cannot be eliminated in this way, the connection should be disassembled, the gasket inspected and replaced if necessary.
