Will bring the most vulnerable first
“The weather conditions show that we must be prepared and house illegal migrants not only in tents, but also in suitable cabins. This is the place that should start next week,” A.Bilotaitė said on Friday.
According to her, the Medininkai houses will have the possibility to house about 1,000 illegal immigrants.
“The priority is to release our firewalls and make it possible for our officers to do their jobs and for migrants to live where they belong,” said the minister.
According to A.Bilotaitė, families, mothers with children and other more vulnerable people will live in the cabins for the time being.
“It is not good for babies and young children to live in very difficult conditions, we have to take care of them first. And young, healthy men can still suffer if they live in less comfortable conditions, ”said A.Bilotaitė.
“The goal is to release all the firewalls, but first we will raise the vulnerable people and then we will examine them in order of priority,” added the minister.
He also reported that border guards will soon receive salary supplements.
“Today our officers are doing a very important job and risking their lives, their health, their work is very dangerous, and the Ministry of the Interior has a clear decision that these people should be paid accordingly. Therefore, the decision was made to pay additional supplements, ”said the minister.
Žydrūnas Karčiauskas, head of the Property Management Board of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS), explained that the huts will be divided into zones, a canteen will be installed and it is planned to feed the migrants with hot food.
There will also be a special hangar-leisure area and sports facilities.
“As you know, the migrants are from different countries, of different religions, so it will be safer for everyone, there will be zones. There will be sanitary blocks, a dining room, as well as a room with recreation areas for the children to do, a bathroom, a house of prayer and the opportunity to exercise, ”said the SBGS representative.
Two migrants were detained
Last day, Lithuanian officials detained two illegal immigrants and handed over more than 100 people, according to data released by Statistics Lithuania and border guards on Friday.
The number of detained migrants has dropped dramatically in recent days, as border guards were allowed to return to Belarus and be directed to official border checkpoints.
Rokas Pukinskas, a representative of the State Border Guard Service, confirmed to the SNB that more than 100 migrants were handed over last day.
4,112 migrants entered Lithuania through the Belarusian border this year, Statistics Lithuania reported.
Many of them are from Iraq.
Lithuania accuses the Belarusian regime of organizing migration flows and calls it hybrid aggression. Because of this, a state of emergency has been declared in the country.
