These UK championships are unofficially called the amateur golf world championships. This is the oldest and most prestigious golf competition for amateur women.
After playing 74 strokes in the qualifying round, the Lithuanian golfer was among 64 players who continued their fight in the playoffs for three days.
GB Starkutė’s first playoff appearance against England’s Flora Keites was not bad. Our athlete was leading by three points after 12 holes, but on the 18th hole he was already only one point clear.
The hit on the rolling track ended somewhere in the field, on the grass. However, a great short shot and a rolling shot “saved” the pair (standard number of shots) and won.
In the 16th final, again England’s opponent, Isle of Man, Ana Dawson. Before her, the Lithuanian golfer immediately gained a three-point lead, passed it and defeated it on the 15th hole, already leading by four points.
Gilė Bitė said that after the competition, the game went well: he hit the rolling field with accurate shots, he almost always rolled to get a better result than the standard number of shots. She played better than the field standard.
The eighth final match was with Emily Price, who won the England Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship two weeks ago and led the qualifying competition (Gilė Bitė was only 20 years old).
Lithuania once again led by two points after 1 – three holes. Knocked out an opponent with cancer who plays well when leading herself. Gilė Bitė, again playing better than the field standard, won by three points at the 16th hole.
Eight girls reached the quarterfinals, occupying the following places in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR):
5 Allesia Nobilo (Italy)
17 Paula Schulz-Hanssen (Germany)
27 Emilie Alba Paltrinieri (Italy) – Will play in the semi-finals
41 Fuller Anabel (England) – Will play in the semi-finals
71 Aline Krauter (Germany) – Will play in the semifinals
175 Emily Toy (England) – Will play in the semi-finals
296 Gilė Bitė Starkutė (Lithuania)
653 Caitlin Whitehead (Anglija)
GB Starkute only had Emily Toy, the winner of last year’s “Amateur Women’s Championship”, who advanced to the next stage at the 20th hole. At first, the champion felt a bit tired, so he made mistakes, and the ours returned to play with precision and energy.
After six holes, the advantage was even four points. In the second half, however, the dominance began to melt. At the 13th hole, the referee unfortunately did not allow the lost ball to be thrown out of the water. With a free kick, he had to repeat the blow from the elimination area.
After some mistakes on the 16th hole, the score was unfortunately the same. And although the Lithuanian 17th hole had enough 2 strokes to play, it advanced again, on the 18th the opponent equaled the result and on the additional 19th hole he won the match.
The 19-year-old Lithuanian athlete ended her successful competitive season in Europe with the best performance of her career: she won the Estonian, Polish and Lithuanian Open Youth Championships and became runner-up in Slovakia. In September, GB Starkutė returns to the University of Arizona in the United States, where he plays in the First Division of the NCAA Student League.
