One of the most important boxing matches of the year took place in Las Vegas, USA, where a 23-year-old American Teofimo Lopez (16-0) defeated the 32-year-old Ukrainian boxing star by unanimous decision of the judges (116-112, 119-109 and 117-111) Vasilija Lomačenka (14-2) and became the first lightweight fighter to join the WBA (Super), WBC (franchise), WBO and IBF world champion belts.

Lopez has become the youngest fighter since the founding of the WBO in 1988, with all four world champion belts.

These boxers were initially supposed to meet at Madison Square Garden Arena on May 30, but the fight was canceled due to a coronavirus pandemic.

Although the contract signed by V. Lomačenko and T. Lopez does not foresee the possibility of a rematch, it is very likely that they will fight again.

Lopez built up his lead in earlier rounds, managed in his own way to prevent Lomachenko from taking the lead, and although referees Tim Cheatham, Julie Lederman and Steve Weisfeld all declared Lopez’s victory a big enough difference, the action in the ring was intense. on both sides.

V. Lomachenko didn’t hit a lot in the early rounds, while T. Lopez was aggressive. Everything changed in the second part of the fight, when V. Lomachenko started hitting a lot more, but the Ukrainian never managed to seriously injure his opponent.

According to CompuBox statistics, Lopez received more hits (183 of 659 vs. 141 of 321), hit harder (148 of 364 vs. 78 of 172), but V. Lomačenka received more jab (63 of 149 vs. 35 of 295).

Just 10 seconds before the end of the duel, referee Russell Mora stopped the fight because an accidental blow to the head over T. Lopez’s right eye opened a cross wound.

In less than seven years, the Ukrainian managed to become the world champion in three different weight classes in the professional ring and was called by many the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Before that, Lomachenko had a phenomenal career in the amateur ring. He became a two-time Olympic and world champion and once triumphed at the European Championship.

The last time V. Lomachenko fought in 2019 in October, when he defeated Luke Campbell by unanimous decision of the judges. This was the second time since 2014 that V. Lomachenko won without knocking out.

T. Lopez fought before that in 2019. In December, when he “heated up” the fight between Terence Crawford and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, he stopped Richard Commey and won the IBF champion belt. The American remains undefeated: 16 wins in 16 fights and 12 knockouts.
