“I could no longer read or drive, and my quality of life changed. I was worried that I would not be able to preserve my vision, but the doctors assured me that after a corneal transplant the left eye could be preserved, ”Algirdas recalls.

After a visit to an ophthalmologist, the man was diagnosed with corneal blindness caused by corneal dystrophy, as well as perpetual macular degeneration, closed-angle glaucoma and cataracts. According to the World Health Organization, corneal blindness is the fourth most common cause of blindness in the world.

“This disease usually occurs due to corneal dystrophy, a hereditary disease that does not occur immediately after birth, but only after a few years or decades,” says the head of the Kaunas Eye Disease Clinic, prof. Reda Žemaitienė. “Until now, the only way to restore vision after diagnosing these diseases is through a corneal transplant.”

In the fall, the Kaunas clinics performed a layered endothelial keratoplasty (corneal transplant) in Algirdas, followed by cataract surgery.

“This operation in corneal diseases is often a challenge for doctors, but we could not delay, because while we waited for the transplant, progressive cataracts and closed-angle glaucoma could have caused serious complications and irreversible blindness,” said prof . R. Žemaitienė. “We are happy that the cataract operation was uncomplicated, and then Algirdas quickly received a donor cornea.”

The ophthalmologist says that the condition of the patient’s eyes is excellent at this time. “The doctor can evaluate the result of the operation before the patient,” emphasizes the professor. – After the transplant, the vision returns after a few days, but Algirdas did not question the work done by our team for a minute. Today, there are no more threads left after corneal transplant surgery, the patient can read and live independently and with quality ”.

Algirdas is happy with the vision that has returned after the transplant. “After the operation, the image in my eyes started to shine and now I see very well, I even try to drive. For me, a transplant, like a miracle created by doctors, is not hidden by a man. – I am grateful to prof. Reda Žemaitienė and the entire team of the Eye Disease Clinic for the operation and care. I have no doubt that the doctors did everything they could. “

The Kaunas Clinics Eye Disease Clinic is the largest institution providing ophthalmology services in Lithuania, which is why eye surgeries of varying complexity are performed here. This clinic provides ophthalmologist services on a regular basis, subject to all safety requirements.

“Although the pandemic caused by COVID-19 infection affected corneal transplants worldwide, the Kaunas clinics in 2020 were successful. 36 corneal transplants have been performed here, representing a significantly higher number of corneal transplants than in previous years ”, says Prof. R. Žemaitienė.
