Having a baby after a positive coronavirus test: there are cases of giving birth on a respirator

“Please, I said: take that test for me. Maybe I am wrong. I feel healthy, my family is healthy. (…) But the head of the department tells me, “no, we are not going to redo. Let us trust our laboratory, “said Eglė Drūnė from Klaipėda.

Eugenijus Zalagėnas, deputy chief physician of Klaipėda University Hospital, said that according to October 15 by order of the Minister of Health, the examination will not be repeated for asymptomatic people.

The woman had to give birth in a room specially equipped for the infected. She says the delivery was unusual just because of the respirator.

“It’s a matter of giving birth with a respirator. The delivery was natural, without any stimulation, I gave birth on my own. I got up from the maternity table, put the items in the basket and walked out into the room with my feet. .

We joke with the midwife. They say that “this is rarely the case in our normal postpartum ward,” said E. Drūnė.

A day later, Egle and her newborn were escorted home.

“It just came to our notice then. If possible based on health status, we release him after a day or two. The newborn was tested for hearing and vision and vaccinated against hepatitis and tuberculosis. My mother I didn’t want to, ”said E. Zalagėnas.

There were misunderstandings about vaccines, tests, diet

Klaipėda did not understand why he was in such a hurry. The woman who has just given birth says that vaccination has not been adequately explained to her. Other doctors have advised against vaccinating the newborn until the situation clears up.

“There are no specific instructions on how that works in a particular situation. Or maybe they are, but there is no mechanism to follow those instructions. Because, as I mentioned, I was discharged one day after a while, the baby was not genetically tested after two days, ”said E. Drūnė.

The necessary genetic testing, which must be performed on all newborns to protect them from threatening consequences, is said to have caused a nervous war. The hospital explained that the test would be performed by an outpatient clinic.

“The study on metabolic disorders, according to the order of the minister, is carried out on the second or fifth day, so the neonatologist called the family doctor together with the patient, found out that the examination should be taken to the polyclinic and wrote a brochure for this examination, “said E. Zalagėnas.

But the outpatient clinic explained that it did not want to take the risk. At the very least, the trial will be available in a couple of weeks. The Klaipėda resident then contacted the geneticist and indicated that there was no delay, otherwise the investigation would be inaccurate. And the stubborn mother did not give up.

“Both the genetic testing was done because of my perseverance as a mother, and we will make a vaccine against tuberculosis,” said E. Drūnė.

Klaipėda says let’s not wish such bureaucratic traps on anyone. She said that she herself learned that it is also not advisable to feed the baby if the mother is taking anticoagulant drugs that are prescribed COVID-19 because it is not known if they are excreted in breast milk and if it is not harmful to the newborn.

“It just came to our knowledge then. We are all learning together,” reacted E. Zalagėnas.

Five days later, the Klaipėda resident was retested for COVID-19. It is already negative. The woman even asked if she was ill.

Six mothers infected with coronavirus have given birth in Klaipeda since October. All babies that are born are healthy.
