Hana Šumilaitė is not without positivity even now, when it seems that the depressing moods of the quarantine have gripped everyone’s homes and cities. We contacted the actress, who once appeared on television screens, on a rainy day, but as soon as she picked up the phone, the interlocutor was glad that spring was always in her heart, and the fast-paced year is not scary in absolute, just brings more experience.
– Hana, you are 65 years old on May 8, but you say that your heart is definitely young. Does the number of years mean something to you?
– When I was 13 years old, doctors had to have angina. At the time, an 84-year-old acquaintance was sleeping with me in the hospital, so we got together very closely. I remember talking so calmly about death. I asked for a photo of her, I wanted to remember her. When he brought it in, in the photo I saw an immortalized 18-year-old girl standing at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. I was in shock. I realized that I didn’t know those ladies at all. It took a long time before I realized that nothing changes in a person’s soul and heart.
It is unfortunate that young people think completely differently. When I was a teenager, seeing my forty years in my arms, I thought I was old, what they do here. But in fact, the heart of an older person admires everything in the same way, of course, not in the same way as in youth: with enthusiasm, the experience emerges over the years, but basically we do not change. It is a little sad, after all, noticing how the body ages, there is not so much energy.
The heart of an older person is as admirable as everything, only through the years the experience arises, but basically we do not change.
Once we talked to Gytis Padegimas, he said, a man has to live as long as he is curious, as long as he is curious. Then everything is fine. I realize that there are many more young people than me, but it seems that they do not care about anything, they walk with pride. However, many people, especially young people, are given a different way of life. Communication is now not live, but by computer or phone. After all, after meeting a friend face to face he exchanged energy, emotions, good humor.
Even when it comes to quarantine, if you call me and ask if we can have coffee, I always agree. I think things are a little bloated, and if it’s written there that you have to die this year, whether it’s from a virus, the flu, an accident, or a fallen brick, it will still happen. Each of us has a definite time.

– You have beaten young people who are now interacting on social media. Isn’t it that you are completely isolated from this world?
– Of course, I also have Facebook, I receive emails, I use the phone. I just spoke on the phone, so I didn’t get notifications about outgoing messages all the time. I spend an hour on that every morning. I joke about what’s going on on Facebook, I write it for everyone. I even realized there is a bit of that addiction, so I deliberately limit my time to social media.
One of my friends told a story that I laughed a lot about. She has a garden in Kaunas and a neighbor lives nearby. In the past, that woman planted flowers on him, arranged everything very well. Last summer, when my girlfriend arrived, she saw everything shrink. It turns out that her neighbor is sitting at the computer from morning until afternoon, reciprocating, flirting with the cavalry. Go, what happens to a person, there is a strong addiction (laughs).
– In the past, you received birthdays on stage, along with colleagues and fans. Perhaps this year the quarantine ruined plans to celebrate the anniversary as usual?
– I do not plan anything in advance, everything always happens very spontaneously. But curiously, I started thinking about this anniversary after the New Year. My age really needs to be celebrated because you never know when it will last (laughs). I had already agreed with my Georgian friends, they promised to come, I spoke with my Latvian youth friends, my theater colleagues, friends. The house was rented, I found out how to get them there. It is not unnecessarily said that man plans, and God laughs. A great failure came out. Now only the closest friends will gather, a buffet will be prepared, who will come, be fed and watered.
I thought maybe everyone should get together in August, but you won’t relive that birthday humor. I’m joking that next year I’ll pretend I’m 65, saving a year. It is only Saturday, a great opportunity to celebrate (laughs).
– 5 years ago your dream was a trip to Rome, you also wanted to learn English. Were you able to achieve your goals?
– My English, as it was poor, stayed that way (laughs). Then when I have to ask for directions, I can see some words, but I don’t communicate freely. I invite Georgians, people I can talk to, to the amateur theater festival. I have contacts with French, Dutch, but I have to communicate through translators, which I really don’t like. So I laugh when I say that I invite post-Soviet people to work with me in Lithuania, it is easier for me to communicate with them.
When I was 16, I made a list of countries that I would like to visit. At that time, I had a great dream of going to Yugoslavia, but when I tell you why, everyone is laughing. He showed movies about Indians as a child, I really liked one of his actors: Gojko Mitičius, he was our goddess. When I found out that I was filming in Yugoslavia, I wanted to go there.
Although India and Rome were on the list, ever since I discovered Sacartwell, I have overlooked the Italian capital. I think if I had friends there, I would go with them all the time. I still live this dream, I hope it will come true in the future. But now the teachers have told me that I will need to change the boiler at home. I live alone, so I have to save and distribute money. There must be harmony in everything. And now, due to the virus, we must wait.
– This is the dream of the 65th anniversary: a new boiler?
– Yes (laughs) That will already be the case.

– Talking to you, I can’t help but admire the energy that comes out. Where did you get them from?
– There are all kinds of days. Someone said that only idiots can be completely happy. Of course, no matter how pathetic it sounds, I’m concerned about Lithuania, what’s going on here. But I try to understand: if I can’t change anything, I don’t have to worry. You know, people often only care about their few problems, everyday life, they rarely look up higher, towards their heart and mind. Such is the identity of the nation.
My generation has learned to read between the lines, has developed my thinking. He has survived, so I blindly don’t believe lies, and cynicism is a lot now. It saddens me that the people who think about his condition are gone. Now everyone is considering what to do to improve on their own. There was also everything in the time of Smetona, but even so some people did not think of themselves, now I miss them very much.
– You said that in your youth you wrote love letters to a loved one. Is there now a man who donates flowers and supports in all areas of life?
– I still have a fan of my youth, he never forgets to congratulate me on Christmas, Easter, birthdays. But this is not my man, only I am very happy that he doesn’t forget me. I’m constantly waiting to fall in love (laughs), then I feel an increase in creativity. I’m still not burying my last hopes.
I am constantly wanting to fall in love, then I feel an increase in creativity
– Girlfriends don’t say that that loved one should already be taken?
– Friends just say that maybe they don’t need it anymore (laughs). If, seriously, after a divorce with my husband, I felt emotional depression for 10 years, I couldn’t trust men. Then something else could have happened, there were all kinds of options, but I felt resentment. When I came to terms with that, I saw that all the men were already married, and I adhere to the principle of never starting with them.
A very interesting story happened in his youth. We met a boy, great love broke out on both sides. He had already submitted marriage applications to another woman, but he said, “If you ask me, I will return them.” It was a well-known Kaunas family, united not out of love. I thought about my husband’s offer for a week, but realized that I would not build my happiness with strange tears. You know, I couldn’t be happy thinking it hurts another woman a lot.
There are so many predatory women who think they are worthy of love, happiness, 80 percent of them want to break a family and get to theirs. And men are still children, they need new toys, new women, so go like hedgehogs in the mist after another. He often grew up in a divorced family with a mother or aunt. They lost their male origins, while women, on the contrary, became stronger, more independent. I was also often beaten by all kinds of mothers, but I wanted my man to be smarter, stronger. The most beautiful thing is when a woman is strong and discovers a man who can weaken her with him.
Loving relationships are always complicated, but there is nothing more beautiful in life than them. When I think about it, it is a very big lottery. Now I see people my age who look the same way, white with jealousy. I am very unfortunate, it is a shame because being old in two and being together is a great happiness.

In my life, I met a man who was younger than me, an athlete, I felt so small with him. I still carry that feeling with me. When we met now, I thought I would have been very good to him. But when she was over 40, she knew she loved children and could no longer give them away. But I believe in reincarnation, I think I learned a variety of lessons, so it will be very good in the next life (laughs).
– In the past, you often greeted on TV screens, now you dedicate yourself to the theater scene. Aren’t you considering going back?
– Television was an adventure for me. I never caught the attention of the producers, I didn’t go to Vilnius and I didn’t offer it to anyone. I appeared on the screen because I was invited.
And I work with amateur theaters all my life, we travel through Lithuania and the world. The people that my family calls come to play after their works, they are various musicians, builders. When I tell others, everyone is surprised. Now we are learning the texts through Facebook or the web, this activity seems like a sweet through a glass, but when the quarantine is over, we will be able to show the performance in a month.
– But television also provided unforgettable adventures, such as learning to spell while playing a movie. Are you still interested in this activity?
– Yes, I have my own program (laughs). But when people call me and ask me to spell, I reply: I can’t. Any divination is a cognition of the psychological type of man. After communicating in 5 minutes, you cannot understand it, but understand what it is like, feel if you are a materialist or a pragmatist. I also have my own cards, I have drawn humorous drawings on them, I know in advance what I will say about them. For example, when a card with furniture is removed, I say that the repair does not end with the person. Very often you manage to hit (laughs).
I also remember the girls who were very excited before the exams during their studies at the Klaipėda Conservatory. I looked at his palm, saying there was a test ahead, but I was so lucky I couldn’t even believe it. In this way you reassure the person, he goes to the teacher with confidence, he does everything well and when he comes, he tells him how it has worked perfectly. You always have to support the person, and when you browse, he believes in it more than you would say otherwise.
A friend of mine says that all women are witches (laughs). But I am a little afraid to delve into that esotericism, but I believe in the beyond. After my father’s death, it used to be that I dreamed of him, sometimes and now I talk to my mother, she seems to give me answers to various questions.
– Now that you have more than one collection in your home, where does the passion for collecting things come from?
– One of my friends, an artist from Great Britain, brought a very interesting kettle and wished the collection would start with it. Later I told the other people, so I kept giving away one at a time. At first I bought simple teapots, now I try to make them more interesting. I have a clown form with the attributes of Shakespeare’s theater, but they take up a lot of space, no more where to build. My second collection is cows. I once donated one of them on my birthday, so if I see something original now, I will buy it. I have some clowns, shacks, somehow I manage to pick them up.

– And what are the biggest trophies in your collections?
– Everything usually looks like someone. For example, I have a teapot from Japan, with painted geishas, it is very dear to me because it was donated by a good friend of Sacartwell. A son of my other friend had recently arrived, his mother from Turkey sent me a tea set. The old teapot is decorated with fake gemstones, it is very eye-catching, it stands out from the whole collection. Now everyone is trying to promote minimalism at home, but when I meet people like that, I feel like a hotel. And I’m not afraid to pick up a lot of the nice things that I display in the rooms.
I had brought my collection to the show during the collectors days, maybe it is on display in our house of culture. Sure, after 50 years it will be an antique, but now I don’t think they are very valuable.
– Are there more plans on the dream list?
– Organize a show and go to Sakartvel with him. I have an offer to visit London with the theater, so I hope traveling is cheaper after quarantine. My plans are related to the theater, we are going to Lithuania and a children’s program, everything is related to the stage. And what’s more, the boiler needs to be replaced (laughs).
