Guida, 14, returned to the world of sounds in an exceptional operation: this is the first time such an operation has been carried out in Lithuania.

The woman reveals that this implantation is the third for the child, the first was done when he was only five years old and the second, when he was seven years old.

“Everything went well with the second implant, Gvidas could hear, he attended regular school like all children, he lived a full life,” recalls his mother. – Almost 7 years after surgery, the implant has become unbalanced. The infection began, several complications, for which they had to be urgently removed and others placed, but it happened that we had to wait for new implants all year long ”.

The mother remembers that while she was waiting for new implants, the most difficult thing was when a special hearing aid broke, a tape that allowed her to hear her son.

“Until the hearing aid is repaired, the child cannot go to school, it becomes difficult for him to communicate and all I can do is wait,” says Kristina.

Guido was diagnosed with ear lobe atresia and shovel dysplasia. Due to a congenital anomaly, he did not develop eardrums or tongue, so the child could not hear since he was born. According to Kaunas Clinic Ear, Nose and Throat Otolaryngologist, otosurgeon Giedrius Gylis, the only way to restore hearing in patients like Gvidas is surgery.

In the Kaunas clinics, two subcutaneous hearing aids were implanted simultaneously in Gvidas.

“The operation was complicated, the patient’s bones were soft, so only a third time was it possible to find a place to hold the magnet,” says the otolaryngologist. – In the future Guido will have an ear lobe reconstruction, but now he will live a full life, he will be able to swim, dive and hear with both ears. The implanted hearing aids are hidden under the skin, so they will not have any contact with the outside. “

Although Guide still needs time to get used to the new implantable subcutaneous hearing aids, today it feels good.

“For now, listen through a special hearing aid, a tape, and when fully healed, you will be able to listen through implants,” Kristina opens.

Before the operation, Kristina was worried that everything would go well, but today she is happy that her son can listen again and thanks the doctors at the Kaunas clinics for that.

“All I can say is thanks to Dr. Giedrius Gylis, the ENT doctors Ieva Rasteiniene, and everyone else who restored Gvid’s hearing and did not allow him to lose hope,” thanks the mother.

“We can only be glad that we had the opportunity to help this child, because so far only one hearing aid has been implanted in Lithuania. We believe that 2-3 patients a year may need this help,” says G. Gylys.
