Graduates have many concerns about vaccines: they put all the dots on the “i”

The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport (ŠMSM) held a debate during which they answered questions from graduates about vaccination. There were several questions from the students: will vaccination be mandatory, will twelfth graders be able to choose a vaccine, and what to do if they feel unwell after vaccination and need to learn?

Here are the most frequently asked questions.

What if the second vaccination date is scheduled during the exam?

Currently, three Lithuanian companies are vaccinated: Pfizer, Moderna and Vaxzevria (Astrazeneca). The fourth, Johnson & Johnson, should arrive in Lithuania soon. Currently it is known that all vaccines used in Lithuania require at least two doses, the intervals between these two doses are different for each vaccine.

Simona Stankevičiūtė, physician, clinical pharmacologist, advisor to the State Medicines Control Agency and member of the Committee for Human Medicines of the European Medicines Agency, says that when a person is invited to get vaccinated, they are informed about the vaccine.

A second dose of Pfizer is recommended 28 days after the first, Moderna 21 days and Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) 12 weeks later.

“However, if the vaccination takes place more or less seven days around that date, and especially in the case of the AstraZeneca vaccine, nothing bad will happen. If you are being vaccinated with AstraZeneca and you know there is a math test or history at the time the second dose is recommended, ask your GP or someone else to record you for the second dose in the 10th, 9th, or 11th week. It is possible to do this and nothing bad will happen, “explained S Stankevičiūtė in the discussion.

This is also recommended by ŠMSM.

“When a graduate receives the first vaccination at the vaccination center, they are given a second date at that time. It is at that time that the graduate must ask that this other date not coincide with his exam, ”commented Dainoras Lukas, Counselor of the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Jurgita Šiugždinienė.

What if the exam is coming, you need to study and feel bad after vaccination?

In the public sphere, there are testimonies from vaccinated neighbors that there may be some deterioration in health after receiving the vaccine for some time. Some have a fever, others have a headache or muscle aches.

The next few months will be difficult for the graduates, the maturity exams are approaching, they will have to learn a lot, so each day is important. Some graduates worry that declining health after vaccination will cost them a lot of valuable time.

S. Stankevičiūtė says that to prevent or reduce the body’s adverse reactions to the vaccine, two paracetamol tablets can be taken before the vaccine. This is also stated by the manufacturer of Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca).

“But it won’t necessarily have those side effects. You can arrange to get vaccinated on a Friday afternoon when the lessons are over and on the weekend instead of taking an active break in the garden, you will rest in bed if the temperature rises. Think about it. , understand that these undesirable phenomena will not necessarily happen and if you plan to come to get vaccinated ”, commented S. Stankevičiūtė.

Some people may have weak limbs after any vaccination. However, as your doctor reminds you, the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks, so you don’t have to fear reactions from your body.

“Viral infections alone cause this condition several times more often than the vaccine. In medicine, drugs, and vaccines, we weigh the benefits and the risks. There is no intervention that does nothing. If you do nothing wrong, you probably won’t have no effect. The benefit-risk balance is positive for vaccines, “says S. Stankevičiūtė.

Is it possible to choose a vaccine for high school graduates?

Graduates, like the rest of the population, can choose which vaccine from the manufacturer they would like to receive. Graduate surveys are conducted in individual municipalities, in which twelfth grade students can express their wishes.

“When the schools conducted the survey, in many municipalities, the graduates were able to answer their questions about whether they agreed to be vaccinated with some vaccine or just some,” says Luke.

However, Dr. S. Stankevičiūtė states that vaccines should not be divided into best and worst, and encourages vaccination with whatever vaccine is primarily available.

“My favorite infectious disease doctor in the US always says and I will tell you to choose the vaccine that is offered to you now. That’s for the best, “commented S. Stankevičiūtė.

Some people have various allergies. Although there are no contraindications for allergy sufferers not to be vaccinated, it is also possible to opt for a vaccine based on allergies.

“The vaccine must be tested for substances that a person is allergic to. If there is a vaccine, then he cannot be vaccinated with that vaccine, he can choose another,” says S. Stankevičiūtė.

Will unvaccinated graduates be admitted to exams?

Unvaccinated graduates will not be discriminated against and may attend maturity exams.

“Since vaccinations are not mandatory for graduates, there is no way to prevent them from taking the exams. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated people will definitely be able to sit for the exams,” said D. Lukas.

It is true that it is not yet known in what exact order the maturity tests will be carried out.

“There will be some security measures in any case. As in the previous year, when there was no vaccination, certain security measures were maintained and the graduates kept them in the auditoriums,” said D. Lukas.

It is also not yet known whether unvaccinated graduates will need to take Covid-19 tests. Questions about the organization of the exams should be answered in the near future.

The tv3.lt portal recalls that graduates were included in the priority vaccination queue last week. Along with graduates, all educators and all personnel who had direct, albeit short-term, contact with the pupils or students were included in the queue.

“We want all educators and all people who work with pupils and students, as well as sports coaches, to have the opportunity to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Graduates are also included in the priority group to ensure that they return to school as safely and quickly as possible. I note that vaccination is not mandatory, anyone can choose. However, I invite you to get vaccinated for your own safety and the safety of those around you, and I did it myself yesterday, ”said Minister of Education, Science and Sports, J. Šiugždinienė.

It is reported that unvaccinated graduates will be able to take maturity exams, vaccination is not mandatory. However, they are also included in the priority group and given the opportunity to be vaccinated before mass vaccination.
