Gintaras Grušas has been elected president of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences

G. Gruš is elected president of the CCEE in Rome, where the Plenary Assembly of Presidents of the European Episcopal Conferences was held.

The Lithuanian Archbishop replaces Italian Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, who led the CCEE in 2016-2021.

The Plenary Assembly also elected two vice-presidents of the CCEE, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, Archbishop of Luxembourg, and Ladislav Német, Archbishop of Belgrade.

According to the website of the Lithuanian Episcopal Conference, the Council of European Episcopal Conferences was established in 1971. The aim of the Council is to promote cooperation among European bishops. The Council of the European Episcopal Conference is currently made up of representatives of the Episcopal Conferences of 43 European countries.

On Sunday, the CCEE will end its session with a mass in the Lateran Basilica, the most important church in the world, the Pope’s Cathedral. The mass will be led by the newly elected president, Archbishop G. Grush.
