Like every summer Saturday morning, TV3 viewers will wake up to the culinary travel program “Food Road” in Lithuania. Friends of the expedition – culinary Ilona Juciūtė-Čibirkienė, member of the “ŽAS” group Gidonas Šapiro-Bilas and chef Dilanas Dampella Gamagė will embark on the eighth trip this summer, where they will visit the gastronomic and cultural pearls of Vilnius and the county of Vilnius.

Dylan, who came to Lithuania from Sri Lanka a decade ago, makes no secret that he soon loved this country and very soon began to call it home.

“To this day, I can’t imagine living anywhere else, Lithuania is my love. Of course, I missed my homeland, Sri Lanka, I haven’t been there for more than a few years, but I start a family in Lithuania. I will hide, when I first arrived, I really had thoughts of throwing everything back and going home, but with time I got used to it, made friends, met my beloved Renata, had a child and only here I imagine my life and my future ”, Dylan opens.

The man says that although Sri Lanka and Lithuania are separated by vast cultural and religious differences, he easily fell in love with and accepted local traditions and celebrations, and intends to raise his son as a Christian and as a true Lithuanian citizen.

“I am a Buddhist, Renata is a Catholic. This does not hinder our communion at all, because Buddhism is more of a philosophy of life that does not prohibit the practice of another religion. I like to visit a Catholic church in Lithuania and we are also going to baptize my son first. Of course, we are also thinking about weddings, but we are not in a hurry. My parents don’t like it very much, because in Sri Lankan culture, a baby has to be born into a married couple. But for us, as well as It is now, first I would like to take Renata to Sri Lanka, to receive a blessing from the parents who live there. We have already planned a trip to our homeland in the spring, but the pandemic that has spread around the world has also upset our plans, ”says Dylan.

Although the couple thinks very carefully about the big party, when he travels through Lithuania with the “Food Road” project, the man constantly finds various locations that are perfect for wedding celebrations.

“None of my family has visited Lithuania yet, so it would be great to invite everyone here one day. When traveling through Lithuania for the third summer and arriving at historic mansions or modern restaurants, colleagues always joke that it would be a great place for celebration. of a wedding. But everything

Living in the entertainment and leisure center of Belmonte this summer, this place really left the good impression that I would gladly bring my own party here. It is also funny that there is a tradition in Lithuania to take the young man over the bridge during the wedding, there are even seven of those bridges in Belmonte, ”laughs Dylan.

Culinary pearls of the Vilnius region

This Saturday, the “Food Road” trio will embark on their eighth journey, where they will visit the Vilnius region and the gastronomic places that are hidden here. The friends will begin the expedition by visiting the entire residence of the “Food Road” team this summer: the “Belmontas” recreation and entertainment center. The architect Ričardas Stulpinas will tell how the French water mill built in the Pavilniai Regional Park in 1838 was revived for a second life, and the director of the center Paulius Sinkevičius will invite you to a tasting of delicious dishes.

“This area has long been called Belmont, although this Italian name means ‘beautiful mountain’. There are no mountains in Lithuania, as in Italy, of course, beautiful hills explode in the Pavilniai Regional Park, but even historians themselves do not know the true meaning of this name. However, it is very good that even Italy is included in this complex “, says architect R. Stulpin.

Bolstered with delicious dishes, Ilona, Bilas and Dilanas will continue their journey to Trakai, which has a deep history, and visit Argo Trakai restaurant, located on the shores of Totoriškės Lake, where masterpieces of Georgian cuisine will be waiting for you.

“To get authentic flavors, we ship all the spices from Sakartwell, and now even our bosses have started cultivating them. For example, walnuts are used in almost all Georgian dishes, so a walnut tree grows in the restaurant’s patio, behind the window, ”says Edgar Koldar, the owner of the restaurant.

The trio will start the gourmet feast of Georgian dishes with megrheli kachapuri with cheese inside and out, a special salad prepared according to a secret recipe, will continue the discovery of new flavors with pork ribs, lamb tongues and sausages, marbled perch, musk perch, well, kozinakais mascara.

For a new side of Trakai, Bilas, Dilanas and Ilona will also visit the “Food Mania Terrace”, which operates a little further from the hustle and bustle of Lake Galve, whose menu is completely unusual for Trakai.

“Although I am a resident of Vilnius, but when I moved to Trakai, I wanted a place here that was not necessarily geared towards a tourist. Visitors to the city are always looking for kibinas, and we don’t even have them here, ”says Inga Barkauskienė, owner of the open restaurant.

This place offers its diners Mediterranean cuisine, balanced dishes of meat, fish and vegetables and special desserts, well, and the “Food Road” team will taste not only delicious sandwiches, but also veal jaws, tuna tartare and duck “Confit “.

Satisfied and happy presenters will have another travel point – Vilnius Old Town, where they will get acquainted with “Vilnius Gingerbread”. This is a family business, because the owner Alvydas recipes

he took over from his mother, who learned them from his great-grandparents. To preserve this beautiful baking tradition, the owners of “Vilniaus meduoliai” involve their children in the production process.

“Our gingerbread is only 100 years old and appeared in this country before the First World War. At that time, there were only two types of gingerbread: rich gingerbread and “piernik” made from sugar and eggs. In those days, you could buy a cow for a bag of spices, so not everyone could afford to bake a gingerbread like the one we are used to tasting today, ”says Alvydas Griškevičius.

After becoming familiar with the secrets of making and decorating one of the attributes of the Kaziukas fair: the legendary gingerbread, Ilona, Bilas and Dilanas will not hesitate to try this craft themselves. Well, after testing your pastry skills, you will continue the expedition in the center of Vilnius, in a green wooden house between the brick buildings and in the restaurant “The Old Green House” that operates here.

They will be greeted by familiar faces: Paulius Sinkevičius, director of the Belmontas recreation and entertainment center, and the architect Ričardas Stulpinas, who will tell all about the green house that has been remembered for more than a century. Until the 20th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, a residential house with up to five families lived here, before the First World Order, the editorial office of the newspaper Lietuvos žinios settled here, and in 1913 the writer Julija Žymantienė-Žemaitė moved to live in this green house . Well, today a great restaurant has been established here, which throbs in the spirit of the interwar period and pampers its guests with both Lithuanian and European dishes.

“This place quickly became loved by both local and foreign guests. Lithuanians, who are visited by foreign guests, often bring them here to get acquainted with Lithuanian cuisine – cold beets, zeppelins. However, if the guest did not like it, as we do when we go abroad, that we have to eat with crooked teeth, then the menu includes European cuisine for all the tastes of the guests, ”says P. Sinkevičius.

The culinary travel guide “Food Road” will continue its tradition and will travel to Lithuania for the third time. The public is loved by the trio of hosts: chef Ilona Juciūtė-Čibirkienė, member of the ŽAS Gidonas Šapiro-Bilas group and chef of Dilanas Dampella Gamage from Sri Lanka promises even more new flavors, unforgettable experiences and visited objects, because this year the show returns twice. The season will see even more beautiful corners of the country.
