This week Šiauliai was surprised by the news from Betsafe-LKL about the changes taking place in the team. Former Aurimas Urbonas and costumed legionnaire Sethas LeDay left the club and veteran Mindaugas Lukauskis joined the team.

After all, Šiauliai residents detonated the biggest news bomb on Wednesday, when headlines on basketball portals announced: “Šiauliai” is reviving the basketball player’s career. Gediminas Orelikas.

Having spent the last two seasons due to repeated injuries, Šiauliai has been playing sports with his hometown team for some time and is planning his return to great basketball.

“We talk to the coach all the time, that’s how it was last year. He said that I can join them when I get better. From the first days I started playing sports, we talked and they waited for me until I was ready to play,” said the player. about the agreement with Šiauliai.

The city club should also be special for him because it was here that the first steps of his career were taken: the match was held in 2006-2007. and 2009-2010 stations.

At Betsafe-LKL, G. Orrelik last played in 2016, when he represented the capital club. During his years in Lithuania, he has become both the most useful player in the regular season and the Citadele King Mindaugas Cup champion.

Although the 197cm forward has not competed for two years due to injury, his passport figures indicate the age at which the end of his career is not yet fragrant; With that in mind, the basketball player returns to Betsafe-LKL.

G.Orelik’s thoughts on a difficult period without basketball, the return and the desire to travel the world, in a conversation with LKL.lt.

– In recent years, his return to the square has been very far due to injuries. How does it feel to finally get back to playing basketball after such a long break?

– It will be clearer after the first game. Now I keep waiting for that feeling, wondering what it will be like: very scared or not. You have to wait and see for yourself, but I think everything will be fine. Although when Saturday comes I may say that I had to be afraid (smiles).

– How did you find Šiauliai’s attention? Have you been playing sports with the club for a long time?

– I started the station standing and then I contacted “Šiauliai” so that I could do sports. I have been training with the team since then, but I have not planned my mode yet, I only played sports. It lasted around 3-4 weeks. I saw that things were looking up and Coach Sireika talked a lot, wondering when he would return. Then it turned out that I stayed with “Šiauliai”.

– How much did playing in your hometown influence the decision? Perhaps you feel calmer and safer in your environment before returning to the field?

– I started doing sports here, I’m used to it, I know everything. I do a bit of sports and with a personal trainer. Everything went well, both my hometown and the team I played for. Here I have the right conditions: on the most free days I want to exercise individually because I am not yet in good physical shape. I want to strengthen myself so that things happen faster.

– You played in Šiauliai ten years ago, this time you didn’t stand out very well, was everything forgotten after that and it didn’t affect your decision?

– It was all, I did not get into the situation much then, it was a matter of the old management of the club. I don’t feel angry about it, I’m not old enough to get angry at everyone anymore, I got over it. What was – is gone, time will not go back and you will not change anything.

– Before, you competed in Venice and showed a great sports form there, it seemed that you could go one step further. Then you got injured and a long period without basketball began. How did you miss it?

– I spent a lot of time on the operating table and in rehab. There was everything, both psychological problems and bad decisions, but still I ended up hooked. It seemed that I could play sports, but then I had to have surgery again, the same situation happened again, everything comes together. Stay ahead of time 6-7 months, shake your head, and try again. Little by little I established myself and now everything is going for the better. I’m not that old yet, I have time to play.

– Do you feel the effects of the trauma when you return?

– You feel that the consequences will be the case for the rest of your career. Many times that place was cut and fixed. But if I don’t play, I don’t start, I don’t see myself during training, nothing will change. I wonder how it will be in the game because you will have to enter. It will not be the case that you immediately get 20-30 points. It would be a miracle, but you have to believe in miracles (smiles).

– This year you turned 30, that age in the career of a basketball player is still considered a flower of strength. With what more goals does he return to basketball?

– You have to take care of the body and everything will be fine. Šiauliai is not the stop where I would like to finish my career in five years. I can’t spit on that opportunity, but apparently I will. I just want to get stronger, catch my game, feel the beat. I would still like to travel the world.

– You haven’t played in Betsafe-LKL since 2016, what changes have you noticed in the league since then?

– After the operations, I did not want to watch basketball at all during those years, I wanted to recover. Watching basketball and my heart aches because I can’t do it myself, so I tried to watch fewer games. I’ve been coming and looking for about half a year, but it’s still hard to say anything. Playing a few games will make it clearer.

– M.Lukauskis accompanies you to the team, with whom you had to play in Vilnius in 2014-2016. Now you will be one of the best players on the team. Did you ever talk to him about playing together?

– We played together in Vilnius, and now we are both in Šiauliai training sessions, we will talk about that. We always agreed with him and we didn’t get angry. Maybe it sounds like saying that I myself am a veteran. A lot of young people have been playing in “Šiauliai” lately, I was not very interested in that game either, and now there are older people, not everything is bad. We will see in the first game, suddenly that good game will not come, because there are new people, but little by little we will get involved and everything will go very well.

– “Šiauliai” has not yet experienced the taste of victory, what is the most important thing to improve in the game so that the series ends and the situation stabilizes?

– I have not yet experienced that taste of victory and will have to do it on Saturday. Let’s try. Now things are looking up. I hope to see this not only during training sessions, but also during matches: the players will understand what needs to be changed. If we succeed and we feel like it, everything will be super.
