“It seems to me that the people who were gathered there were absolutely clear and expressed that clarity with emotion. Well, maybe some political scientists did not like the content of the speech, it is another topic here, but the speech was prepared on the principle that I have represented since the election campaign, ”said G. Nausėda.

He recalled that during the presidential election campaign he had said a few years ago that “the family is an institution, marriage is an institution enshrined in article 38 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, and we must respect our Constitution.”

The head of state said he would evaluate the association bill when he saw it drafted. He said he was in favor of regulating same-sex relationships “especially in areas such as heredity, obtaining information about the partner’s health, etc.”

Last Saturday a “Great March for the Defense of the Family” was held in the capital. Thousands of its participants protested against the Istanbul Convention and other initiatives that they said were directed against the traditional family.

During the event, the Presidency distributed a video greeting from G. Nausėda on the occasion of the International Day of the Family. He was also shown at the event. In his congratulatory message, the head of state said that relations between people of the same sex should be regulated, but in accordance with the Constitution.

President Asta Skaisgirytė’s adviser said earlier this week that the country’s head’s speech was not specifically directed at the participants of the march, but was directed at “all families” on the occasion of International Family Day.
