“The current geopolitical situation, and especially the hybrid attack on the EU carried out by the Belarusian regime for some time, presupposes the need to change the EU legislation in order to be able to respond effectively to such attacks in the future,” said G. Nausėda.

According to the presidency, European leaders also discussed the issue of relations with China. G. Nausėda noted the need for the EU to speak with one voice.

“In the context of comprehensive relations with China, the EU27 + 1 format would be the most appropriate for the development of the EU-China dialogue,” said the president.

In July, G. Nausėda addressed the President of the Council of the EU, Charles Michel, and the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, with a proposal to establish this provision as the main one of the EU’s relations with China.

The first day of the EVS session focused on the role of the EU in the world, in particular in relations with China and the United States.

According to the presidency, European leaders also took time out for the situation in Afghanistan and migration issues.

G.Nausėda stated that the EU must overcome all the tools that will help prevent a humanitarian crisis in the region and a possible wave of illegal migration to the EU.

The first session of the informal EVS meeting provided time to discuss the EU’s relations with the US According to the President, the US is the EU’s main strategic and irreplaceable partner in a democratic world facing geopolitical challenges , economic and technological, thus strengthening the transatlantic link in all areas, from security to trade, from global standards to the fight against climate change.

The second day of the European Summit will focus on EU enlargement and relations with the Western Balkans.

An informal EVS meeting is taking place under the current Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
