From the filming field to the Curonian Spit dune guards: “I won’t miss the phrase: ‘Don’t bother me on vacation’ anymore.

Dune keepers at Parnidis Landscape Reserve and Nagliai Nature Reserve preserve the greatest natural value on Curonian Spit – the sand dunes. Every year 4-5 young people commit to this work. One of them is Barbora Boguševičiūtė, who came from Kaunas and graduated in costume design in the capital and lives in Vilnius. We spoke with the girl about the patient work of the dune guard, which required her patience. Before the quarantine, the girl toured Lithuanian and foreign filming sites, helping the actors to combine the costumes.

– Barbora, how long have you been in Nida and what are you doing there?

– I have been in Nida since the beginning of June, my job is until October 12. Well, at first I was the guardian of the dunes. We have two reservations: Grobštas Reserve (Parnidis Dune, ed. Past.) And Nagliai Reserve, where we change every other day. Get up in the morning, go take care of the Parnidis Nature Reserve or the Nagliai Reserve so that people behave well in them.

In the Parnidis Reserve, it is important to follow the rules: no skating on the dunes, no littering, no burning, no picnics. Although it sounds strange, the children bring boards to skate in the dunes and the parents rejoice by clapping their hands. The main job is to be in the dunes and make sure everyone enjoys and respects them. Many walks a day, walking about 20-25 km. Of course, you can sit on a bench all day and talk to people, but the work takes 10 hours, so you walk through the dunes, meet yourself, discover new places, meet people, explain why you can not be in some place. Don’t talk to everyone, but if you’re going to have a picnic, be aware that you don’t drink in a public place. Recreational activities are not allowed on the reserve, birthdays are not allowed. Talk kindly to fairy tales to take out the trash.

A month ago, my colleague went back to work as a teacher, his job was to drive through Curonian Spit, Juodkrante, Preila, Smiltyne, to observe that there were no campers where they could not, tents in the forest, fire, machines not parked in the place. So this month has more work, more base and can go a lot.

– What offenders are the most common?

– The main warning is not to go down the slopes of the dunes. I’d say I’m 80 percent surprised. people who seem to come on vacation, carry things, lock their brains and do whatever they want, say, “Don’t bother us on vacation.” It is this phrase that I will miss the most: “Don’t bother me on vacation.”

It is this phrase that I will miss the most: “Don’t bother me on vacation.”

Criminals of all ages, I would say, are mostly between 30 and 50 years old. What do they like? For example, the Nagliai Reserve, where the Dead Dunes are, has a 1.1 km trail, the only place to visit. There are badges where you can’t go, where there are dune slopes.

I don’t know why it is necessary to walk 1 to 3 meters to the field, climb, take pictures, even if the image does not change. People excavated the dunes, thus shaking off two tons of sand. One million feet left and no video. Others are dissatisfied when you moralize and traditionally “don’t bother me on vacation.” There are warning signs everywhere. It seems that you look at everything not with your own eyes, but through the lens of the phone, no matter how much the video shows, it goes, and it goes beyond the signals, the slope that destroys it, it does not matter. It is important to have a good image on the phone screen.

These criminals happen daily, of course, especially on weekends. The season is over, now less, but full on weekends. Every summer day. In fact, getting tired of talking about the same thing. And they do not talk to young people, but to explain to adults, the age of their parents, what is strange and absurd how to behave in nature. You try not to cause conflict, to say beautifully, courteously, to understand, to stand up to look away.

– You mentioned skating from the dunes. Many may not really understand why it is prohibited.

– The most desirable thing is to descend from the Parnidis dune, here is a reserve, the greatest attraction. Tourists from Nida know Parnidis and the hourglass. Open up all the areas called deserts, it’s fun to go after them. Where there are no tracks, it is fun to go. I myself remember from childhood that it was possible to skate off the rink, not even what the consequences were. After all, the dune is shrinking.

I myself remember from childhood that it was possible to skate off the rink, not even what the consequences were. After all, the dune shrinks.

In the Parnidis dune, since it is not a reserve, but a reserve, you can walk to the bottom, there are signs, two cognitive trails: along the seashore, through the dunes, where you can walk, but without walk. Of course, it is fun for one person, and that the image is not what is left for others to enjoy, it does not matter at all.

And the children ask why they can’t. I explain to the child that the sand is rolling. In fact, it is not difficult for a child to explain the need to talk to her parents. The child sees the mountain and wants to skate, the parents have to look more responsibly.

– Educational work, communication with people requires a lot of patience, many times probably the other way around what a bad word they say. Will you return to this job next summer?

– I doubt it …. Tired of communicating with people, about 80 percent. such where it seems to have entered through one ear, left through the other. Constant bombardment of them. I don’t know if I would be determined to do it again because it takes a lot of talking. I envisioned this position similarly, only I thought I would interact less with people. Because the quarantine and the vacationers could not go abroad, this year Nida was overcrowded, perhaps next year there will be fewer people, it will go to Spain, to Italy, it will be a little calmer.

I have spent time in Nida since I was a child, the relatives have an apartment. It’s especially fun here in winter, my dad loves ice fishing so he visited this place several times a year. This time a bit repetitive. And I told my parents not to go in the summer because the flow of people was too high. And now is the best time: the weather is still good, one can stay alone by the sea, the streets are empty.

– You have graduated from costume design studies. How did you find yourself in Nida in general, in the position of guardian of the dunes?

– I worked as a freelance on the filming field, working mainly with actors. I worked on big projects, one of those series “Chernobyl”, a one-year project, as well as “Catherine the Great”, part of which was filmed in Lithuania, as well as in Latvia, St. Petersburg. I also worked a lot with Scandinavian series.

I was tired of the movies, I thought I wanted a simple job that was physical, that my head rested to clean the streets and go home for lunch. Yes, the money is not millions, but it would blow my mind.

After a long project I came back from Sweden, the quarantine started because the film business stopped because you could no longer film with foreigners, after two weeks of quarantine I realized that I would not stay at home and needed to get a job . I was tired of the cinema, I thought I wanted a simple job that was physical, that my head rested to clean the streets and go home for lunch. Yes, the money is not millions, but it would blow my mind. I sent a couple of CVs for the camera job, but nobody accepted. A friend then recalled that he worked as a dune guard last year. It turned out even better because I spent all my time in nature. Now I am also thinking of studying nature, I am thinking of ecology.

– How would you describe this experience in general? He still had to spend a lot of time alone, in nature, in the dunes.

– Because the area is huge, you can go and where nobody goes to the reserve. Yes, for those who cannot be with themselves, that job would suffer. Being alone with thoughts in the dunes or the forest. If you do not think about work and entertainment for yourself, as for everyone at work, then time is not interesting, but if you think about making new signs, sand traps, collecting garbage, such small devices, then the day passes more Quick.

It’s one of the best summers, I feel like I’m 18 years old. Always in nature, there is no stress, you go to bed with a calm head, do not think what you are going to do tomorrow. You go out into nature and interact with people. Truly one of the most exciting summers.

The guards are the main eyes

Lina Dikšaitė, Deputy Director of the Curonian Spit National Park 15 minutes He said the position of the dune guards has existed for a good decade, but their number increased five years ago, when the trail in the Nagliai Nature Reserve was renovated, and the flow of visitors increased.

“It just came to our knowledge then. It is necessary to warn them, inform them about the current procedure in the territory, carry out prevention. The guards of the dunes are our main eyes, direct contact with our visitors. The most sensitive place is the Parnidis dune, which is sensitive to the visit, and the trail of the Nagliai nature reserve ”, he said.

According to the deputy, this position really requires a lot of patience, a desire to communicate with people, it is necessary to dare to make a comment, to teach.

“We need people who come into contact and do not hide from tourists. The dune guards face dozens of people a day, so patience is needed. Here’s a very good test. From time to time after the first season he says no more, next year he will not return, but he will come, but such a minority. Young people often come to these positions. If you want to test yourself, maybe this time it’s like deciding which lifestyle to choose, where to move, ”said L. Dikšaitė.
